ThinkProgress » Exclusive: Foreign-Funded ‘U.S.’ Chamber Of Commerce Running Partisan Attack Ads

October 6, 2010
The Plum Line - U.S. Chamber broadens attack on Think Progress, alleges Soros-funded plot to silence business
"With Dems seizing on Think Progress' allegations that U.S. Chamber of Commerce attack ads may be partly funded with foreign cash, the Chamber sends over its most detailed response yet to the charges, leveling the scorching claim that the liberal blog is part of a Soros-funded plot to stifle the free speech of corporations."

ThinkProgress » Exclusive: Chamber Receives At Least $885,000 From Over 80 Foreign Companies In Disclosed Donations Alone
"After ThinkProgress published its exclusive investigation of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce [^] revealing that the Chamber has been actively fundraising from foreign corporations for its 501(c)(6) account used to run a $75 million attack ad campaign, Chamber lobbyists found common cause with Beck and many of the conservative talking heads. Shortly after our investigation, Beck hosted an on-air fundraiser, asking his audience to give to the Chamber.... In his latest appeal for support to the Chamber’s foreign-funded trade association, which already counts JP Morgan and ExxonMobil as dues-paying members, Beck yesterday told his audience that the Chamber simply "defends the little guy."

Glenn Beck Calls for ‘Largest Day of Fundraising’ for Chamber of Commerce | The Blaze
("They are us," [Beck] said of the Chamber. “Put your money where your mouth is".... Within an hour Beck and his listeners had broken the single-day donation record." - Blaze article. Lot of little guys out there! They don't get prayer cloths, though.)]
And then what happened?

ThinkProgress » MEMO: Health Insurance, Banking, Oil Industries Met With Koch, Chamber, Glenn Beck To Plot 2010 Election
"Casual observers might have been surprised by the Chamber’s swift alliance with Beck (Chamber executives appeared on the Beck radio program and sang Beck’s praises on the Chamber blog). However, Beck never disclosed his long working history of discussing political strategy with America’s largest corporations. The Koch memo clearly shows that Beck has been collaborating with the Chamber, as well as other titans of industry, for years."

Tom Donohue: Obama's Tormentor - BusinessWeek
[Tom Donohue, president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce,] announced that the Chamber had been digging into the funding sources of anti-globalization groups that might try to thwart their efforts overseas. "We found that 50 or 60 percent of their money comes from the same person," Donohue said dramatically. He wasn't ready to name names just yet. Instead, he acted like a man with a hand grenade in his pocket who couldn't wait to hurl it. "It's going to be a story," the chamber leader promised. The people sitting around the table seemed baffled. (Later, when asked if he was referring to George Soros, Donohue laughed and said, "That's a pretty good guess.")

And then what happened?!

Beck: The Puppet Master [sic!] - Fox News Video - FoxNews.com

"Oh, give it to Glenn, he's our top closer these days. And it's sweeps! I tell you, Roger, God is a Republican!"

If you're still in the need of something to read, enjoy this about the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, for whom Glennie did the favor above, the little suck-up. (It was his second favor for them, the first being the big fundraiser, and if you sent money in to that you should read this).

The Chamber of Commerce is Playing Tea Party GOPers for Fools - John A. Farrell (usnews.com)
For proof, look no further than the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, that big marble temple across the street from the White House, which Glenn Beck and other TPR champions have been hailing as a wonderful defender of the good old America that existed before the evil elites hollowed out the industrial base, stole our money to bail out Wall Street insiders, and allowed those awful immigrants to wreak havoc on our culture.

Because the Chamber is in a squirting match with President Obama over whether its secret donors represent foreign interests, the TPR types have rallied to its defense. After all, as any good Islamic terrorist will tell you: The enemy of my enemy is my friend.

But have Beck and the others looked at what the chamber stands for? Have any of you read the policy priorities on its Web site?

Right, better not read the articles if you don't think you're going to like what they say.

I wonder why Glenn doesn't ever talk about the Koch brothers. Why, if you only watched his program you wouldn't even know they exist

They do, though. For you righties who aren't expected to know, they're the man behind the curtain whom Glenn is paid to make sure you pay no attention to. The amazing Becky ladies and gentlemen.

I didnt know til just now that the Glenn Beck puppet show used an actual puppet show, the kind with visible strings, to rope in Glenn's own puppets as the kickoff of his "Puppet Master!" show last week. Seems disrespectful of his audience's mental acuity to me, but he and his writers and his bosses know them and I don't.
New York -- Creepy medieval puppets hung from the ceiling on the set of the "Glenn Beck Program" -- a conquistador, a squire, a witch, and a bearded guy who looked like a cross between Santa Claus and the Fiddler on the Roof.
Welcome to the "Glenn Beck Program," where Jews are Nazis and those who exploit ancient anti-Semitic conspiracy narratives are friends of the Jews.

Beck's bizarre, dangerous hit at Soros - CNN.com
Funny article above, written by this astute person, noting some RW attacks on Soros over the years that you might not have been aware of (I wasn't), from Lyndon LaRouche to Newsmax to BillO to Tom DeLay, right on down to Glennie.

Astute person is astute about RW thought regarding "Immigration and the 'Race Card.'"

Here? Beck credits oil magnate Charles Koch during rant parodying* An Inconvenient Truth | Media Matters for America

Their name doesn't come up at all in searching Glenn's website.

At Foxnews.com, there's Koch Nitrogen criticizing the EPA in an AP piece (with an inexplicably approved title and opening paragraph) and a couple of articles on David Koch giving money to ballet companies, but I don't see any sign there that Glenn ever mentioned the Koch brothers, any time.

In fact searching on "koch brothers" at Foxnews.com only one thing turns up, a shabby and unconvincing couple of sentences stuck into a standard attack piece on Obama, by a Liz Peek, who takes a stab at defending the Koches from this devastating article on them in the NYT which followed the big expose of them in The New Yorker. Interestingly, Liz's editorial, which is completely generalized and generic except for the Koch defense, was published several days after the NYT piece, I'd guess to first evaluate responses to the Times and NYer articles, just in case someone might have read one of them to a Fox viewer, and protect the Koches' preferred low profile as long as possible.

If you run across the other one or two times Beck mentioned either or both Koch brothers, please post them, because I can't find them. Thank yew.
