American society is much more violent than European society. America has more violent offenders.
You rarely have anything constructive to add to the debate. And this time you didn't disappoint.
Why don't you try to offer some opinions as to why this might be the case?
For example, you could have said something like this:
Cause: 70% of black boys are born into fatherless homes.
Effect: 60% of the prison population is black.

We are a vindictive violent society that has no hesitation in throwing people away. We are also so ignorant that we fail to realize that doing so often exceeds the crime that was committed in the first place.
I am constantly amazed at the complete lack of compassion that fellow Americans exhibit. So many feel no empathy for a person who suffered terribly and ends up 'crazy'. If that 'crazy' person commits a crime, we offer them NOTHING but prison. I wrote somewhere that I'm fine with someone being crazy as long as they can explain it to me. If a person's upbringing was full of horrible events, I can better relate to them and understand them. On a national level, we offer no such understanding. We are so obsessed with our own victimhood that we can't relate to anybody else. How did our supposed world-renowned and envied free society devolve into 310 million independent souls unable to feel anything for each other?
So if the crazy person kills an entire family or molests someone's kid, you would be totally fine living beside this person? So you are fine with living next to a serial killer? Violent offenders should receive the maximum sentence available. My brother is a prison guard and said that a lot of the violent offenders should not be in society. It just isn't safe for the general public.
That being said, if we wish to bring down our prison population, we need to reform our education system and foster care system. For example, as a teacher I had a severely emotionally disturbed child in my classroom. I tried for a year to get him help and counseling to no avail. There was so much red tape that the child never got the help he needed. He attempted to kill another student the following year. He was only 10.
In the foster care system, a child may find a great family, the family may wish to adopt the child, but due to the red tape, the adoption won't go through. Then the child bounces around from foster home to foster home with zero stability. The child really needs stability to have a chance at a nice life.

That is way too simplistic. Things are much more complicated. After the two WWs a lot of kids in Europe and elsewhere grew up without fathers, still they didn't become criminals...
Way too many drug offenders are locked up in this country. We need to focus on treatment for users. Save the jail space for violent offendors and corrupt polititians.
Makes no sense that a low level dealer can end up with a decads long sentence while a child molestor gets out after a few years.
They have far more homogeneous societiies lacking in certain groups with high propensities for crime. You can figure out who it is.

You need to remember also that most of the people in prison here are poor people. We have a lot more poor people here than you do, because we have a much much larger immigrant base than you do, and blacks. We get a lot of poor immigrants here because of our stupid ridiculous immigration system. In addition to that we don't have the jobs yet we keep importing more people, putting blacks in more competition and so crimes happen. This is why crimes are very high in black and other minority neighborhoods mostly because of economic issues. In Europe, coincidentally, they have a very high Muslim incarceration rate and they are the poorhouse of Europe
