So, those of us who carry a cell phone in our cars in case of an emergency/accident would have to get out of the car to call for help? Just think " ran off the road, trapped in the car and can't get out" or "breakdown at night in a deserted area or really bad neighborhood" or "flat tire on a 4 lane highway" ...maybe someone should see if LaHood has stock in OnStar.
The article, by the way, doesn't mention any of the above. I'm wondering if this is more control and reporting by clueless urbanites who don't consider such reasons for having a cell phone in the car. Nothing in the article says the car has to be on.
“There’s a lot of technology out there now that can disable phones and we’re looking at that."

I told you libs, eventually they come for your vice.
oh get off the complaint horse. Although good intentions its a mindless one. The number of accidents occuring NOT ONLY in the urban areas but also in the suburbs and rural areas. The majority of the deadly accidents are occuring on the major highways. Goodness you would even politicize a desperate move to save lives.

Do you think they could use that technology to block cell phones in supermarkets too ?
I really do NOT want to hear you gabbing on the phone and blocking the aisles while I shop.
Oh..can we add movie theaters and libraries ?
People are inconsiderate when it comes to cell phones; you can't turn the dang thing off for 2 hours ? You can't let it take a message ?
Do these people bring the phone to bed with them at night..just in case ?

Not working inside a car's a little extreme but I'm all for using GPS technology to make them shut down when moving over say 2 1/2 mph, I've seen far too many incidents on the road with the cause being some nimrod jawing away on the phone paying no mind to the road.

Or texting while on the highway..that is far worse.

That's right - this is the NEW America. Identifying individual offenders is way too much trouble. Much easier to let Big Brother keep a close eye and micromanage us all.
What a joy life will be once we put all available technology to work in surveillance and control. For the public good, of course.

Bah..just embed everyone with chips. If you get out of line then someone in some control booth will press a button and send a shock through your body.
Remote cattle prod.

Anyone who's stupid enough, no STUPID enough to be texting/talking on a phone while paying NO attention to the road deserves to be shut down. At the very least I should be allowed to shoot them in self defense as they attempt to harm me
And BTW, cutting the phone off only under certain conditions IS identifying individual offenders.

Exactly...This will never happen, but we already of the States mandating the use of a cell phone as a probable cause for the police to pull you over. This is not a partisan issue as the OP would like it to be. Again its a mindless suggestion as well as a desperate well intentioned one.
Everyone should have an integrated bluetooth telephone connection like in my BMW. Hands free is the only way to go.
