with NO identifying or security features whatsoever other than a signature.

Surely in this day and age we could be issued with a more SECURE "card" than a piece of flimsy cardboard we're not even allowed to LEGALLY laminate to protect it from normal "wear and tear".

Why not a plastic card with a photo and fingerprint?

Since one rarely has to show their social security card and it is advisable to keep it in a safe place, I guess the Government doesn't feel the need to change the format of the card.

I have no idea where my card is at the moment. I have my number memorized, as well as the SS# of my wife.

It actually says somewhere on mine that it is NOT to be laminated. Or I would have done so myself.
