Then you talk to them and find out they are 3rd or 4th generation and can't even speak Italian. I'm all for honoring ones heritage, but if your going to fly a flag on your cars radio antenna or have an Italian flag tatoo on your arm don't you think you should at least be able to speak the language. Just sayin.

Oh this is one of my biggest pet peeves. I am first generation american, and speak my parents two native tongues and an additional language that I studied (4 total). Something rubs me the wrong way about those who labels themself a nationality yet don't speak the language at all let alone travelled to the country or really know its traditions. Those Italians that you are referring to only associate Italian cuisine with sauce and cheese, and that to me is very sad. Italian cuisine is far beyond "mozarell' or "sauce" or "pasta". Most italian cuisine does not revolve round it....but try telling that to the Jersey Shore cast who I am sure don't speak a lick of Italian. My children are second generation and have learned 2 languages in addition to English. We travel every summer to Europe to visit their grandparents and family. They communicate with them, without relying on English. I will encourage them to study an additional one once they enter middle school as my parents did for me. I think that my approach is sadly in the minority.

Heck...guess that could apply to "African Americans"...they are much further removed and no offense but they are creating faux holidays.

All holidays are made up. Just some have been created sooner than others. C'mon...you don't really think that Jesus was born on the same exact day that pagans celebrated for thousands of years and just happens to be right on top of the Winter Solstice?

Good point Tom but stop trying to fog up the truth...Kwanzaa was deliberatley made up as a political anti-white establishment holiday. It's Black Racism at its best

Being "100% Italian" is the closest thing to a cultural identify some of these people have.

What is wrong with being proud of your heritage? I don't think that you should have to know the language to be proud of your background.

My better half teaches in illustrious Wyandanch and Kwanzaa is rarely if ever given any acknowledgment during December but when our kids were in school in White Islip it was all over the hallway bulletin boards.
