Well I say it and I have bought lots of lunches for soldiers too. When I see a soldier in line, I make the cashier put his tab on my card. And people said it to me when I was in the USAF- to which I always replied "thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve".
sometimes I dont like what you have to say,and sometimes I love what you have say. This time I love it. HAPPY THANKSGIVING
How many of you actually say this to service members and why?
I for one think it is highly offensive and this is nothing more than empty platitudes.
I don't say it, but I would not go so far as to say it's offensive. It's just based on a commonly held but false premise: specifically, that the soldiers are doing something that benefits my life.
First of all, you can thank your servicemen by not squandering them in unnecessary foreign adventures. You can thank them by engaging yourself politically to prevent them from being unnecessarily put in harm's way.
"Thank you for your service" is an empty gesture and it is the new "support our troops" sticker. And frankly, you can thank them by footing the bill out of your tax dollars for the military expenditure.
Furthermore, these gestures are fascist and militaristic, they are glorifying the use of military and the often accompanied nationalistic attributes.
Sometimes the smallest gesture one can make means the most.
Thanks Guamanians! And to all that serve to defend freedom everywhere!
