I offered my services as a volunteer and was asked if I was employed. I said no. They told me that they could not offer me a position because unemployed volunteers leave after they find employment.

I might have talked to the wrong person, but that's what I was told. Can you believe it?

I would say you did talk to the wrong person. If you really want to volunteer there go back and speak to a Mgr.

There's lots of organizations that would be happy to have your help. Don't assume that one volunteer organization represents all of them.

I can relate...
I went to my doctor for a checkup. I mentioned to him that I was going to start an exercise program. He said that I should hold off on exercising until I was in better shape.

ok, then don't bill me until I pay you

I agree. Any non-profit that turns down a volunteer deserves what they get. Try elsewhere.

I'd either talk to someone else at that place or go to a different place.

I had to submit three letters of reference and have a background check done (and I have a fingerprint clearance card and they still had to confirm it was good!) just to volunteer at this one place.

I don't know. All places are different and I am sure you can find a place that will welcome your help.

I had to do the same when I was working with kids. Some places do have more hoops to jump through. But still, the reason they gave the OP is a bunch of crap!

No. I don't believe it. You didn't even mention what the group was. Why not? I know it's frustrating to be turned down. I would try another group until you find one that appreciates your interest in helping them.
