You're not seriously trying to claim he's a conservative, are you?
Daley is a Dem. Chicago has l-o-n-g been governed by Dems. As such, the bill for all the Dems' spending is coming due and Chicago is tanking financially. Time to ream the property/homeowners by cranking their property tax bills up 60%.
You cannot just say to people that were hired and have worked under the promise of a pension that "oops, we were kidding you" and take it away. Chicago's taxpayers are going to have to suck it up and pay the piper.
How is that going to happen when they have no job and no money?

Chicago Democrats are not necessarily "liberal". Some of them like David Orr and certain lakefront and Hyde Park politicians are but others are what you would call moderate to conservative Democrats. The old Mayor Daley was certainly no liberal as any Hippie that came to the city in 1968 will tell you.

Why not? If you are dumb enough to work for an employer who promises a $100k salary when it brings in $50k, what did you expect...

You can always move out to Arlington Heights. That is assuming that Chicago does not have to clout to force the rest of the metro to pay its bills like it used to do with the Comm Edison Franchise Fee which was tacked on to every bill whether it was in the city or not.

I expect my employer to give me what I was promised when they hired me. If I bought a house in 2005 for $230,000 that is only worth $170,000 now, does the bank expect me to pay $230,000 or $170,000 back to them?
....They argued that the new bill unfairly puts the burden of shoring up the two city funds solely on taxpayers...
Well DUH! Who do they think pays for it? The Tax Money Fairy? Morons.
