Where I live the recession has hit blue-collar workers the worst, guys in construction and landscaping who were making a good living during the real estate bubble are now struggling to find any work at all or compete with illegal Mexican labor for menial jobs. Add to this all the folks who made a career change to real estate or mortgage lending during the bubble, and you've got a huge swath of people let loose in the job market. The people I know who are doing well are all college educated with good tech skills---people willing to adapt(or move) will find new opportunities.
