What if the fedgov. started illegally acquiring secret on private individuals in order to coerce them into doing what it wanted, should such information be made known to the people of the USA?
It IS illegal to have STOLEN property in your possession. Geez man, ask a lawyer that question. If those docs were obtained LEGALLY, this wouldn't be an issue. As far as your analogy goes, if the information was obtained legally, then air it away..

Put aside the actual information contained in the docs, HOW wikileaks came into possession of them is illegal.
You do realise this would mean any news outlet would be unable to broadcast anything the fedgov classifies?

I do believe the Abu Ghraib information was initially classified.

So when they began to broadcast that Plume was a CIA operative it wasnt illegal, even though it was public knowledge at the time? Then wth was the big deal about?

Again, just because I think the releasing of documents are illegal, it doesnt mean I support the actions being disclosed. One doesnt justify the other.

Pentagon Papers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I am starting to think some people here would have supported almost ANYTHING to keep the USA looking good, despite the truth.

Unless you think the media should be prosecuted for broadcasting anything it is not given permission to by the fedgov. you are on a slippery slope.
If someone robs a bank and then gives the money to you, and you take it know the money was illegally obtain, you are breaking the law.. The fact that it was given to you doesnt mean you shouldnt go to jail...

The OP has a very valid argument. Possession of stolen property is a crime if you knew it was stolen.. PERIOD.. It doesnt matter how the item was received, or why, or even if stealing it is good..it is still a crime..

Correction the man who took the documents is being held. We are watching tyranny at its finest. The published reports are true. If you prefer a country where truth is suppressed all the time Iran is accepting applications.

News outlets ARE NOT supposed to air anything classified. Why do you think the source is ALWAYS anonymous when this happens, because it is illegal! Printing hearsay is not illegal, like printing what someone TOLD you. Printing the actual classified document is another story.

And you think this is uncommon? Were you born yesterday? There is a reason the average Joe isn't allowed to see some things. They can't handle it like you can't.
