Tea Party/Republicans/Conservatives - why is the Military offlimits for curbing govt spending?

I always see the right wing up and arms angry about poor kids getting sandwhiches at lunch, or an illegal getting hit by a bus and needing to go to a hospital. Those cost money, and yeah, no wants a poor kid to eat, or an illegal to be assisted by a doctor if getting hit by a bus. So I understand the outrage there (Well, not really, but I'll go with it under government spending scenario).

But, nontheless, we probably spend gazillions gazillions of $$ on almost everything military related. I mean, all the advanced technology alone on weaponry, creating all the weaponry, constantly training all the soldiers on using them, drills over and over, invading countries - two separate wars, building orphanages and everything else in other countries, building massive military bases and embassies and throwing up tough tough defense so no one bombs our large bases all around the world, flying people to them day in day out, just on and on and on and on. That is probably just a small stratch of the service of the true spending costs per day on everything military-related.

I find it funny that giving a kid in NY a sandwhich is bad and should be stopped immediately - wasteful government spending. But if its for the military, that can never be curbed or considered as wasteful.

Can anyone else 'co-sign' on that?

It's not for me. 25% cut in spending across the board, including defense. We were able to get by with that level of spending just a few years ago, we can do it again.

We should cut the military to a degree, but its not whats dragging us down by a long shot. They have a purpose & we need a strong military. There are many better ways to save money than cutting off the hand that defends us.

You beat me to it.

I'm a Tea Party supporter and participant because neither party has seriously addressed spending. I would be happy to see everything on the table, and if what is needed to make spending cuts happen is accross the board cuts, then so be it.

We spend 4 times what the entire rest of the world does on military expenses. Remember, about half of the world are our allies.

We spend 8 times more than our next possible advisory, China.

Yeah, its whats dragging us down in the long term. About 30% of our entire budget is spent on military expenses. Imagine if it were only 20%. We'd still have a military twice as powerful as the entire rest of the world, and 6 times greater than China.

But then Europe would have to build their own armies.

US military spending is foreign aid for Europe and Israel.

The ones that are not for cutting military spending are not believers in the Tea Party movement, just frauds and bandwagon jumpers.
One of the big issues with the Tea Party in the beginning was the spending done by our expanding military empire. All the money and lives saved by bringing our sons and daughters home could be spent here to help get us out of the current depression. We still need to implement new policies that will prevent the government manipulation that put us in this huge economic downturn.

Sure lets cut the welfare programs because our people don't need the help but somehow people in foreign countries need our help more than we do. I still haven't figured that out.

We need to continue or increase both domestic and military spending or the people lending us the money will face cutbacks in their profits. After all protecting the high level bankers and financers is the primary task of government is it not?

Yes, but you have to understand the "sit down and shut up or I'll shoot the bunny" tactic being used here. The left isn't all up in arms to cut the military budget in order to save money. They've had four years to do that. The purpose of this argument is to discredit conservative arguments for cutting spending generally. They wish to simply drive the conversation over a cliff in the same way they did in years past by proposing to close the Washington Memorial. That way they can go home and claim to have opposed spending cuts for good reason. This tactic also gives cover to RINO Republicans who can oppose spending cuts if they are tied to defense spending. Like their big spending Democratic counterparts, they can claim to have had good reason for opposing spending cuts. Look for Democrats to tie any new spending cuts to reductions in military pay and benefits.

Do you have any idea how inexpensive it is for China to put a person in uniform?

The reason we spend so much money to equip our sons and daughter who bravely volunteer to protect us is so they don't go into combat with anything less than the absolute best training and equipment possible.

The ruling Communist Party in China could care less how many of their people are injured or die in war. We, on the other hand, do care how many of our sons and daughters are hurt or killed. We are not China, and the standard that applies to China does not apply to us.

Do you have any idea what it costs to produce airplanes that will never be used, operate bases in countries where we haven't been in a war in over 60 years, and the incredible waste that takes place in the Pentagon?
