[quote=Grim Reader;16953497But the two countries seem to be adopting fundamentally different ways of dealing with their economic problems, the US by spending and the UK by saving. It'll be interesting to see how it worlks out.[/quote]
Not really that different. The 'difference' if you will, is that they had their "2012" elections two years before us and their "Democratic" government has been thrown out. When the American right wing get in power they will attempt to scuttle the poor exactly as the U.K. right wing are doing..
But, it really is a question of priorities and deciding where you want to make the cuts and where you want to get the money from. Over the last 10-15 years, a lot of unnecessary government jobs and programs were created and they all cost money. The British civil service is chock full of "facilitators" and "enablers" as well as with multiple layers of middle management. However, it is easier to go after students than to fire a lot of the people that work for you.
I am of the mind that cuts always should be made to administrative / overhead, before services.
Still, the little ingrates are way out of line with their violence and vandalism. A university degree with a cost of $14K is still a good deal - and they need to suck it up and contribute a bit more to THEIR education. That is NOT too much to ask for.

In the US it is a good deal. In Europe it is not seen as such.
If/when entitlement programs are cut/eliminated,what do y'all see as the reaction of those no longer receiving benefits?
First they will march and hold angry protests outside of government agencies. Note..guards are already at these offices.
When nothing happens it will turn violent. Then the looting will start.
It will spread nationwide as people glimpse what's going on in other cities.
At that point "the people" will start to take what they think is rightfully theirs. How do you stop that ? "the people" outnumber the law.
The American people do not know how to suck it up and do with less.
If anything you see them clamoring for more these days and cling to the hope that Government of all people will create jobs for them.
We are but a ticking time bomb. Class warfare is alive and well..just read the news. As long as the USG keeps sending out checks and refilling those food stamp cards the people will be kept at bay.

Violent student protests have always been a tool of the liberal Progressive left. Ironic that they accused the Tea Party of being the violent ones isn't it?

Well, students are generally left wing and idealistic. Then they get their degrees, get jobs, have a family, have a mortgage, have a career, pay taxes and the rest is history

So...better to keep offering them bread and circuses or let this happen?

Very true..once the money they spend is THEIR money then they realize just how little of it they really have.
