This past week Glenn Beck did a show from the town of Wilmington, Ohio, a smallish town (pop. 12,548) hit hard by unemployment when DHL shut down (put 8,000 people out of work) there. Beck picked them because the townspeople themselves were inspirational in the neighborly way they banded together to help one another. Personally, I think it was the best audience show he has ever done.

"We must thank Glenn Beck’s visit to Wilmington for yesterday’s activity downtown. While his visit provided the community with a one-time opportunity, it still was wonderful to see downtown Wilmington bustling. Downtown store owners reported brisk business. Janine Sodini, owner of Traditions and Rome Jewelers, said there was a steady stream of customers from the time they opened their doors. Hundreds of people jammed into the first floor and basement of Books ‘N’ More to have Beck sign copies of his book and to shop. Throughout downtown, people were carrying shopping bags, and stepping into stores. And, Tuesday night, more than 100 people gathered at Generations Pizzeria and Pub for Beck’s visit there."

OUR VIEW: Dec. 15, 2010, was a special day in Wilmington

"The book store's owner said that he has had people stopping by for about two weeks, letting him know they were buying the book early because they have heard Beck talk about Wilmington's struggles. Because of all the buzz and business being drummed up by Beck's visit, the store has re-hired two workers it previously laid off, and the owner said he is allowing all his workers to put in as many hours as they want this week to help out."

"As early as 7 a.m. on Wednesday, downtown Wilmington seemed bustling with guests. They peeked in store windows and carried bags of Christmas presents, defying the single digit temperatures. 'As soon as we opened our doors [at 9 a.m.] we had a steady stream of customers coming in from all over,' said Janine Sodini, owner of Traditions and Rome Jewelers in downtown Wilmington. “Everyone has been so nice. We are blessed to have this.' Sodini said out-of-town customers have come into her store all week in anticipation of Wednesday’s “America’s First Christmas” event at the Murphy Theatre."

Glenn Beck is putting people back to work. Somenthing the government has been trying to do for years. Yet, they have been miserable failures.

It's like I always say. The private citizen can and will always do more to improve the economy and people's overall well-being than the govt ever will.

But it didn't have to be Glenn Beck. Anyone with a fair degree of celebrity status would have accomplished exactly the same thing in Wilmington. A famous person comes to a relatively nondescript town and causes a buzz for the day--not very surprising. There's no reason to hand Beck special powers he doesn't actually have.

But Glenn Beck was the one who showed up.

But they didn't do it or think of doing it. Oh sure, it was visited by 60 Minutes and Jay Leno but it wasn't for the purpose of helping the economy of Wilmington or to showcase Wilmington to America as a town of neighborly positives. It was to report on a town hit hard by the recession and that's about it. They didn't bring a huge number of people with them like Beck did.

Cheap populism without long-term consequences. They would have achieved the same thing if they had decapitated a murderer on the market square

Do you really think R. Maddow or Kieth O would draw the same crowd?
