Good for Sweden. Its not their problem to educate third world students. The USA needs to stop caring about foreigners so much too.

Deliberatly misleading title, btw. And the fact that that was considered neccessary says a lot.

Swedes and Fins still go to college for free, as do French, Belgians and probably many more that I can't currently remember. Even in parts of Europe where you do pay for university. with the exception of perhaps Britain you don't get ganked nearly as hard as you do in America.

Perhaps I should add that although many collages in these two countries are funded by tax-payers, they also have public schools and schools which are funded by private businesses. The business funded schools are top notch, and the idea should be utilized here too. Basically the businesses donate the money, and get a seat at the board. The board decides what should be taught, and since the businesses sit at the board, they suggest the skills which they needs. Some of the teachers are also employees of these companies, and it serves a double purpose: 1. The teacher knows which skills are important and stresses those skills. 2. The employee earns valuable teaching and public speaking skills in the process. Many IT schools are financed in this manner, and the approach ensures the schools do not teach obsolete programming languages and stick to teaching current technologies.

Here's something more recent on Sweden. The Swedes who responded to this in the comments section gave some interesting responses. Many seem to not favor this policy and instead think Sweden should do something similar as the UK with how they handle foreign students.

Quote:
The main targets of the scheme would be talented young people who want to take two-year Masters’ programmes in natural sciences or technology-related subjects. Under the proposal they would have tuition fees paid and receive living allowances. In return, they would commit to staying in Sweden to work for "a couple of years." If they failed to keep to their end of the bargain, they would be obliged to pay back the money.

Also doesn't this policy end up creating a brain drain for the poor countries that these students are comming from?

Interesting NY Times article on the free French system

Quote:

One result was that the country's university system guaranteed a free — or almost free — college education to every high school graduate who passed the baccalauréat exam. University enrollment soared. The value of a bachelor's degree plummeted.

It appears that maybe the British should have studied what happened in the happy socialist nation of France before they tried to do what has caused all their riots lately.
