George Ryan is "devastated" by a federal judge's decision not to release him from prison early so he can be with his wife who is dying from cancer, his family said today.

"Is this what American justice is now?" Ryan's son Homer told reporters in front of the family's home in Kankakee hours after the 58-page ruling was handed down.

Many people loose loved ones while in prison. It's a good incentive to try and stay out of them.

It isn't uncommon for a prisoner to receive a furlough to visit a sick/dying loved one or for medical treatment, it is a bit controversial because often times they are released unescorted. In all cases it is up to the prison officials/judge. According to CNN:

More than 90,000 federal inmates were allowed to leave institutions unescorted in the past three years, often for medical reasons.

Prison is for punishment. If he hadn't commited a crime then he wouldn't be in that predicament.
