I caught one of those shows, and was equally disturbed about how the audience acted with every giveaway.

However, it was my understanding that the audience was specifically made up of people who had donated their time, money, and effort to charitable activities over the past years.

I suppose she wanted to recognize their efforts and reward them for their giving to others.
