While I was 'bell-ringing' for the SA at Wal-Mart I got acquainted (they are friends now) with several PHYSICALLY and MENTALLY challenged people that were at work EVERYDAY and doing their jobs better than some of the fully capable employees.
Once again... these KIDS are nothing more than sniveling babies.
YUP... still in a wad.
It was more like the parents in this case, the kids wanted to work.
Social Security disability isn't easy to get so the kid most have qualified and for that they have to see a few doctors that the social security office picks.

Really? I was very recently told that I could go through VESID ( paid schooling for the disabled) due to my depression/anxiety and the fact I WAS taking Citalopram (anti-anxiety/depression med) would play in my favor. And that I should look into SSI. NO THANK YOU. There are people in this world that are ACTUALLY disabled.

My sister got it for having anxiety and gets an amount for each of her three kids, she doesn't have anxiety she just doesn't like to work, she did see a couple of doctors but it wasn't too hard for her, it took about a year but she drew it even while seeing the doctors.
There will always be those that find the loophole and milk the system.
It will put a bad light on the program and those that really deserve and need SSI.
It happens with all government entitlement programs..so sad really that so much of our money is being thrown away like that and those that deserve it get caught up in the "public bashing" of the program.
Wow, I was completely unaware that one could even get SSI for being diagnosed with depression or bipolar disorder. What is the reasoning behind it? I mean, I can understand parents who have children with debilitating illnesses that require intensive in-home care, specialized therapists, or equipment, but depression and bipolar disorders? I don't get it.
ADHD appears to be far and away the biggest one, and the justification for including that seems to me to be much weaker than bipolar or depression.
In the case of the OPs link, stop SSI for those that won't control their behavior. Why are kids ever getting $700 a month for something like this? It is still the parents job to raise them.

There could be confusion about the term SSI and SSDI. SSI is all intents and purposes welfare. These moneys do not come from the Social Security fund but from the general fund. SSDI is for those who've worked several years and paid FICA taxes. SSDI is not easy to acquire before retirement for disability. Different criteria involved with SSI mostly one needs to be pretty darn poor to receive it such as not having assets more than $3000 to qualify.

They are on SSI, not SSDI.

What is the difference between Social Security disability and SSI disability?
Social Security is responsible for two major programs that provide benefits based on disability: Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), which is based on prior work under Social Security, and Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Under SSI, payments are made on the basis of financial need.
Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is financed with Social Security taxes paid by workers, employers, and self-employed persons. To be eligible for a Social Security benefit, the worker must earn sufficient credits based on taxable work to be "insured" for Social Security purposes. Disability benefits are payable to blind or disabled workers, widow(er)s, or adults disabled since childhood, who are otherwise eligible. The amount of the monthly disability benefit is based on the Social Security earnings record of the insured worker.
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a program financed through general revenues. SSI disability benefits are payable to adults or children who are disabled or blind, have limited income and resources, meet the living arrangement requirements, and are otherwise eligible. The monthly payment varies up to the maximum federal benefit rate, which may be supplemented by the State or decreased by countable income and resources.
