Hybrids have long been a "stepping stone" model car. Similarly to some of the first fuel injections on cars.

They weren't cost effective, and they were geared towards a very specific market. Later, after years of that market buying the product it was made better, and round about 1986, most all cars started coming with some form of fuel injection.

The airline industry would be 100 years behind what it is today if the federal government didn't push the commercial air industry with subsidies and tax breaks either.
