What exactly do Tea Party supporters mean by limited or small government? How small do they want it? The more I listen to their supporters the more I feel that their beliefs are very close to those of anarchists. Do they really believe that the US doesn't need any government to function?

Examples?
Have you heard anyone advocating such, or just using hyperbole to discredit the cause?
I think they are somewhere in between no government and a governmemt that generates a deficit of over a trillion dollars per year. Their position is not unreasonable. They believe that spending and taxes are too high, In order to reduce both it will be neccessary to shrink the size of government. I would be interested in what leads you to believe they desire no government.

I really don't have any specific examples. It's just what I feel when I hear Tea Party supporters talking about shrinking government.
Most people would put the Tea Party on the right side of the political spectrum. Anarchists are generally on defined to be left wing. I just find it funny that these two groups want almost the same thing despite being complete opposites politically.
Bear in mind, the word "regulate" meant something different when the Constitution was written. So the phrase To regulate Commerce has been misinterpreted as of late. Regulate meant to promote, not control.

Oh but as I explained they don't want the same thing. Anarchists want NO government. Tea Party folks want less government than we have now substantially more than none but less than one that creates a trillion dollar deficit each year. Now if you said Tea partiers were closer to libertarians you may be onto something.
