Dick Winters was a great man... in a generation of great men. His humility was characteristic of the breed. They were ordinary men, most of them mere kids, who woke up one day to find their nation threatened and simply went and did their duty. None of them considered themselves special. None of them considered themselves particularly heroic.
They simply did what they thought they were expected to do.
And in the process they saved the world.
Curahee!!!
And rest in peace.
If I could rep you numerous times for this post I would. Sadly one will have to suffice.
Rest in peace Major Winters. Would that more human beings were like this personal hero of mine. But he lived a good long life. I just wish it could have been longer.
I'm sad to learn this. Some of the best parts of a very, very good miniseries were the interviews with the real people, and I especially appreciated the comments of Richard Winters. RIP
RIP. We lose so many members of our "greatest generation" every day. Please help support the honor flights in your area that make it possible for these veterans to see the WWII memorial, asap!

I wish I could have met him. RIP to a great, honorable man. The US doesn't have many of these kinds of Americans any more. Once the Greatest Generation is all gone, that'll be the end of the best that America had to offer.

When people asked whether he was a hero, he echoed the words of his World War II buddy Mike Ranney: "No, but I served in a company of heroes."

"He was a good man, a very good man," Guarnere said. "I would follow him to hell and back. So would the men from E Company."
