Afraid of them? Maybe ask the neocons. They're the drivers of today's anti-intellectualism and anti-rationalism. Truth tends in the end to crowd out their propaganda...

I've seen people dumb themselves down just to fit in comfortably.

Then I watched them actually BECOME dumb.

When being an intellectual in the USA, is suddenly a "bad" thing?
THAT'S when you head on down the road, to becoming a third world nation.

You betcha.....Steve

I also think that when the ignorant encounter a point of view for which they can't produce a logical or reasonable counter-point, they will accuse others of being elitist.
Unfortunately, a significant segment of America's population is most certainly anti-intellectual, although they will not admit it. They are like bricks in the wall that hold back human progress.
What's your opinion?
Yes, we need more intellectual appeals to Hope and Change.

THis can be seen in the media. Too many are suspicious and mistrusting of intellectuals.

I don't know anybody who is anti-intellectual. Help me with a definition.

On what do you base you claim that a significant segment of America's population is "anti-intellectual"?

The mass media is a good measurement. Like the content of TV programs, it's mostly hollow entertainment. The hollowest are the most popular. News is mostly fluff.
Books that people read; romance, murder-mysteries, spy thrillers, self-help, diets, how to be wealthy, etc. Not much reading material that deals with ideas.
Movies; busty babes, good looking hunks, the old 'good guys' vs 'bad guys'. Movies stress physical accomplishments, that's what makes a hero a hero.
Sports; nothing intellectual there.
How many well known American intellectuals can the average American name? Maybe 5 at most.
How many Americans view universities as places that convert people to communism?
The American masses are easy to convince by using symbols, slogans, and gestures.
The people will not say they are anti-intellectual, but consider themselves to be anti-elitist. The term 'common sense' is used as though the attitudes of the anti-intellectuals are superior to those with an education.
Ask any American; what do you do for your brain that is not job related.

So basically, anti-intellectual is labeling done by liberal elitists toward those who do not agree with their ideals. Because, that is what you are really saying isn't it? How nice to package and label a group who is not like you as automatically inferior by calling them "anti-intellectual".

Where is the mention of 'liberal ideals'?
