As floodwaters rushed up around him and his family, the Toowoomba, Australia, boy -- who was afraid of the water -- made a decision that would cost him his life: His little brother should be rescued first. Rice and his mother were swept away and drowned in the country's massive floods this week.

It was heartbreaking.

My family over there is luckily in an area unaffected by the floodwaters.

I remember the floods of 1974,which were worse.

Another story from the floods.

Quote:
The racing steward recently turned his back on a lucrative and prestigious gig in South Korea to return to Australia and spend quality time with his young family.
This week he again put his wife and child first. The family's plight, huddled together on the roof of their white 4WD in the middle of a river of fast-moving brown sludge, had been beamed around the world - their fate unknown.
Quote:
The Perrys' swamped vehicle, with the frightened trio still inside, was first sighted by a news helicopter bobbing in fierce floodwaters on Monday after a failed attempt to cross a swollen river near the town of Grantham.
When help arrived they had managed to scramble to the roof, from where Jenny and Teddy were winched to safety. Mr Perry was last seen clinging to the roof of the rapidly sinking 4WD in an extremely precarious situation. There was no sign of Mr Perry or the vehicle by the time the rescue helicopter returned.

Throughout this disaster it has been nice to hear of people who have secured their families and belongings and turning back to help out others, not only from Brisbane but across the country.

We all tend to get caught up in the yay for our side mentality that goes along with discussing politics. Every now and again there is a reminder that there are more noble things in the world to consider.
