Disclaimer: Please stay on topic as much as you can. I don't want this to be yet another gay marriage thread or an abortion thread. Oh for the record, I consider myself to Libertarian and this is no way an insult to either Dems or Repubs :P

Republicans tend to believe we should be in control of own life. We need to take as much responsibility in our own lives and the government should have very little to do with our own lives.

Democrats tend to side with the idea of a more larger government run society. No I don't mean communism or socialism, please don't head that way either :P

..With that said, I find it weird that Republicans are so against gay marriage and abortion? We can all agree that both debates we can all have our own personal opinion on the matters. That's fine. But why would Republicans want to deny abortions and gays a privilege to marry? It seems as if with these two situations, they are ok with the government controlling people's lives?

Republicans (for the most part) believe in a free market, believe in less government for less taxes so we can keep most of our money, they believe in the absolute freedom of speech, they believe people should be allowed to bare arms. They would never want these rights (or many other things) to be taken away so "the government doesn't control it", yet.. these 2 issues are something republicans are totally ok with the government being in control of.

Why is that?

I find it weird that people think this. The republicans just had control of Washington for several years. There was no attempt to outlaw abortion. None. Zip. Nada.

It was a democrat that passed the Defense of Marraige Act.

because they are full off it. lol
I know too many Republicans that do not have Republican values. Maybe they think if you deny people something, it will go away? dunno

As much as I dislike the democratic agenda the dems are more consistent imo.

Not really talking about Republicans TRYING to outlaw it, but they are against it and would want it to be outlawed.
And you're right, but that was.. how many years ago? Times change. Republicans and Democrats from say 1960 are not the same now. Even 1996 to now there have been changes in ideas from both parties.

If they were so against it they would have outlawed it when they had control of Congress and the Presidency. They didn't even attempt it. That means they aren't against it or, if they are, it doesn't matter.

Plenty of Democrats are against gay marraige. Everytime there is a vote by the people it gets shot down. In other words, democrats say they are for gay marraige in public and vote aainst it when no one is looking. Again, the dems had control of Congress and the presidency for the past 2 years. They made no attempt to make gay marraige legal. They must e agaisnt gay marraige.

Anayway, I don't understand the point of your post. You said repubs want less government. They do. Nothing you said contradicts that. Just because they don't want less government in the same areas that you do doesn't meant they are contradictory in their beliefs.

To be factually accurate, it was a Republican (Bob Barr) who introduced the Defense Of Marriage Act. The Republican-led Congress passed it in 1996. And Bill Clinton signed it into law.

That's a nonsensical argument because it assumes that only Democrats vote in elections. Obviously, every state has a mix of voters. Democrats aren't even a majority in any state, as far as I know.

Marriage laws are determined by individual states, not Congress.

I think it's because of their really weird pseudo-religious values that they allegedly believe in. There's some objection to same-sex marriage here in Europe as well by conservatives but no way as strong as in the US. Luckily over here we don't have so many worked up religious zealots

As regards marriage, you're right. Republicans adhere to the Judaeo-Christian ideal that marriage is between a man and a woman. Now there are other societies where marriage is defined differently and all kinds of arrangements are called marriages, including polygamy, child brides, even marriage between people and animals. When you untether marriage from its foundation in the Judaeo-Christian ethic you invite that kind of chaos that, inevitably, harms the weakest in society, namely women and children.

As regards abortion, it's a simple matter of the Constitution. The 14th Amendment guarantees each person equal protection of the laws. The first duty of government is to protect life. We don't allow a spouse to off his or her spouse that has for some reason become inconvenient. Neither should a woman be allowed to kill her child because carrying it for nine months is inconvenient.

Another thread presuming to "know' what lies in the hearts of conservatives.

1. I am pro choice. Have all the abortions you want. I am opposed to late term abortions, as the medical evidence from a physiological standpoint shows absolute perceptions of pain and developed neural pathways- i.e. it is murder.

2. I don't mind gays adopting kids if it is a stable home. What the heck- if it provides a kid a better life, who cares. I do oppose gay marriage, as it is changing the laws mostly through judicial fiat. Marriage is a legal contract as well as a cultural custom. The gay agenda is opposing the will of the people in most instances by negating the will of the people via judicial fiat. In short, it is changing the law and generational culture through the tyranny of judicial activism. That is why I oppose gay marriage. (I am not a gay basher- my younger brother is gay).
