I agree, respect must be earned, unlike evidently the Nobel Peace Prize (lol) as even the less than humble Obama admitted this.
Obama has done little to earn respect. Unfortunately he promised much but delivered little.
Anyone who thinks he is one of the most respected must set the bar pretty low.
Where do you people get these ideas? Obama has followed-through on almost all of his campaign promises and is continuing to push for the ones he has not yet accomplished. I'm a centrist politically, but even I can see that he's far exceeded expectations.
Unfortunately, one of his "accomplishments" has been (over)spending even more than Bush did and increasing the national debt faster than Bush did. And forcing government-run health insurance even though the majority of Americans oppose it.
Every developed nation enacted deficit spending to keep their economies from collapsing. Blaming Obama for shoring up our economy that collapsed under his predecessor just reaks of partisan hackmanship. Perhaps it takes a more complex understanding of economic systems to understand why economists use this tactic. I understand how it's not ideal and creates issues of its own, but to do nothing would have sent us into prolonged depression.
Cracks me up that there was actually a debate on another thread as to whether this forum is dominated by far right conservatives. I think this thread proves that it most certainly is.
Seeing how he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, Obama seems to be one of the most, if not the most respected president that the US ever had. He's very popular with the European leaders and is also well respected by Russia's president Medvedev and prime minister Putin. China's Wen Jiabao recently called Obama a great champion of justice committed to world peace.
I can't think of any other president even remotely as popular in the world as him...what do you think?
The problem is that he is supposed to support policies that help American citizens.
These foreigners like the weakening of America.
How many foreign leaders care what we Americans think of them?
I would say that Reagan was the most respected President.
Have you all forgotten that a POTUS is supposed to have the interests of America first?

I'm almost eager to see your surprised face when the economy comes crashing down within one maybe two years. "Perhaps it takes a more complex understanding of economics" you couldn't be any more wrong and this is comforting to the politicians who just want to keep spending your money while you keep thinking they must be very wise men.

Opposition has been predicting this alleged collapse since Obama took office. It's nothing but tired propaganda. Just read old threads on this forum to see how many predictions of such collapses have come to be proven false. I remember the fall of 09 was predicted to be a big one, but Obama's leadership has kept our ship afloat.
I don't think politicians are wise at all, though Obama has proven a vast intelligence capable of seeing all the angles on a situation. I've watched him hold two seemingly dichotomous views simultaneously without hesitation or struggle. He is far more intelligent than either of us, but I still focus more on the people advising on economic matters, and those are some of the best and brightest minds we have.

I'm sure you're aware that at this same point in Reagan's presidency he had a 35% approval rating, Democrats had just swept into power in the midterm election, the bad economy Reagan inherited was still struggling, and liberals were convinced he was a worthless leader and that they had the 1984 election wrapped up.

Those best and brightest minds "we" have did not even see this recession coming. "Hit 'm like a train." Neither were they able to predict any of the previous. The Austrians--who are the real opposition--on the other hand did predict it and were laughed at.
That you call--people like Bernanke and Krugman I assume--the best and brightest minds does not speak very good about your own intellectual capacities.
Maybe in Bizarro World (old 1960s Superman comic book reference).
