News poll finds that Americans strongly prefer cutting spending to raising taxes to reduce the federal deficit. While 77 percent prefer to cut spending, just nine percent call for raising taxes. Another nine percent want to do both.
Most inherently know we cannot continue on the path of massive spending and debt we have seen the last few years.
What is hilarious in the reporting on this poll is the headline by CBS;

Poll: Americans Split on What to Cut from Government

Is that REALLY the "news" of this poll?
Devils in the details.
Now, where to cut? The same 77% of Americans support Social Security in its current form, the same percentage supports medicare in its current form.
So where do we cut? The biggest pieces on the table are unemployment, welfare, and defense. Of those defense is the grossest out of proportion spending there.
But if you tell people you want to cut the defense budget by even 10%, Republicans largely freak out. They want to talk about welfare and unemployment, things that don't slow down the economy, things that keep people from going completely broke and turning to crime.
I'm all for spending cuts, but we've got to be incredibly smart about where we cut. "entitlements" can be reformed, but not cut, most Americans don't want that.

It would be a massive, tiresome, monotonous endeavor, but we should take a peek at the programs, the requests for funding, that are actually in the budgets of the various departments and their sub, subs. It is just mind boggling, tedious and bloated beyond all measure.
To really get to the bottom of where the money is going, you really have to commit some time and effort and LOOK at what they're spending our money on.
There are thousands of outlandish, wasteful "luxuries" in these budgets.
Here's where that poll is misleading. My bet is that most Americans don't want THEIR taxes raised. Another CBS poll from September found that 53% of Americans thought that letting the Bush tax cuts expire for people making over $250,000.00 was a great idea.
I forgot to add this in my post above, but if you will note, 63% of Americans in the poll you cited think it's a good idea to reduce SSI for the wealthy as well--not for everyone.
There is so much federal government and state government spending, it's ridiculous to think they can't find ways to cut spending.
The average working person is watching his taxes go up, cost of living go up, especially health insurance go up, wages stagnant or actually go down, and has to find ways to do it. Certainly the government can find ways to cut it's wild spending.

EVERYONE must take a bite of this turd sandwich called the national debt. Every facet of government spending, including the military as well as social programs, must be cut if we are to survive as a nation. To do nothing will ensure insolvency and the economic and political chaos that will occur as a result.
We should look back at a time when the government was solvent and see what government programs existed then and wipe out all those that have been added since.
Soendin g cuts is the only way to get federal spending under control. Then to payoff what has already been defcit spent fro borrowing we are likely to see tax and ees raised. It does no good to continue what has got you there in the first place.
