I'm not talking about necessary drugs like hypertension drugs or high cholesteral drugs, rather the psychotropic drugs.
A lot of people who are just probably having a period of "the blues" go to their PCP and get prescriptions for anti-depressants. I think at times this is overdoing it and that there are other natural ways to deal with "the blues." I am not speaking of clinical depression, rather something that is situational (for example, mourning, job loss, a break up).
Other people with DSM IV diagnoses that have been ongoing for quite some time are good candidates for anything ranging from anti-depressants, mood stabilizers and even anti-psychotics (used off label for treatment resistant depression, and on label for bipolar and schizophrenia).
Anyway, some of these drugs are very powerful and we still don't know the long term effects of taking them. Some of these drugs can cause some pretty nasty side effects and at least one I can think of is not reversible. Therefore, it's my contention that only those with long standing issues should be on them.

The answer to every medical problem these days seems to be take a drug.
Too much weight? Take a drug
Kids acting out in school? Take a drug.
Can't get it up? Take a drug.
Not feeling too happy these days? Take a drug.
Can't go to sleep? Take a drug.
There are a lot of health and mental issues that could be mitigated with proper diet and exercise. But that takes work and discipline.
But nowadays who wants to do that?

Well, big pharma is in large part responsible for this. I agree - a drug for everything.
Do you think it's over the top to prescribe the drugs like Viagra or should nature really be taking its course? I mean, women don't have a drug to prevent menopause, so why should men get a drug to just "carry on"?
Plus, studies show that when men have children at a later age the risk of certain things with babies goes up.

Judging the posts in this forum, some people aren't taking enough medication!

I agree about the part above^^ these medical drugs are quite the life saver for many folks.
IMO, Yes we are over medicated.
Most docs will give you an antibiotic for the flue, that’s a virus, antibiotics don't touch a virus. Hell most will give out antibiotics for nearly anything (I guess just to shut up the patient). We could go into a list of antipsychotics, SRIs and benzodiazepines but I’m sure many of you here know what those are which is good proof that we take way too many drugs to fix problems that require self discipline. This comment doesn’t frown on the need only the overuse.
I need a Xanax now!

My opinion and that is all it is: yes, we are very over medicated period. We can thank medical tech for lots of wonderful advancements and yes, many drugs, but we also take too many and doctors prescribe way too many tests as well.

Many of the tests are because of lawsuits.
That is why I favor TORT reform.
