"the intellectuals are more totalitarian in outlook than the common people. … Most of them are perfectly ready for dictatorial methods, secret police, systematic falsification of history etc. so long as they feel that it is on ‘our’ side.
- George Orwell

“Progressive” is so much nicer a word than “totalitarian.” Yet progressives are in danger of turning their brand into a frighteningly Orwellian euphemism for totalitarianism. To the Ministry of Truth's “WAR IS PEACE,” “FREEDOM IS SLAVERY,” “IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH,” we now may be required to add:
"TOTALITARIANISM IS PROGRESS."

https://lithub.com/the-thin-line-bet...talitarianism/ This is really a good read- check it out.

Orwell was a communist earlier in life. He volunteered to fight on the side of the communists in the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s and witnessed first hand communism in action. He was particularly disturbed by the Soviet advisers and their treatment of "comrades". Fortunately, Orwell was wounded by a sniper (not killed) and reflected upon his experiences in the war. He had a complete reversal of his previous views and became an ardent opponent of communism/liberalism. Winston Churchill read "1984" nearly a dozen times and was an admirer of Orwell, even though they only met once.

Pretty much the opposite.

Liberalism is a political and moral philosophy based on liberty and equality. Liberals espouse a wide array of views depending on their understanding of these principles, but they generally support civil rights, democracy, secularism, gender equality, racial equality, internationalism, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of religion, and free markets

Totalitarianism is a political concept of a mode of government that prohibits opposition parties, restricts individual opposition to the state and its claims, and exercises an extremely high degree of control over public and private life. It is regarded as the most extreme and complete form of authoritarianism. Political power in totalitarian states has often been held by rule by one leader which employ all-encompassing propaganda campaigns broadcast by state-controlled mass media. Totalitarian regimes are often marked by political repression, personality cultism, control over the economy, restriction of speech, mass surveillance and widespread use of state terrorism.

Au contraire-

Totalitarianism is a natural progression of liberalism, in which more concentrated power exerts greater control over the populace under the guise of "good intentions" to advance their cause.

The efforts of "social engineering", wherever it has been used in the world, has resulted in the opposite- social ruin. With greater intervention in the lives of individual citizens, liberalism tends to demand greater and greater control when the desired results are not achieved with less "radical" tactics. Thus the progression of social liberalism, under the guise of "helping the poor" changes from a presumed altruistic effort to one of subjugation. Witness the current edicts from the current liberal leaders who are dictating radical alteration of personal lives in order to achieve a "green deal". "I am the boss" and "I am a queen" are statements from liberal leaders who do not perceive themselves to be "public servants", but exalted masters of the public.

Make no mistake of it- liberalism is the road to totalitarianism. Witness the revisionist history in which liberals currently engage, consistent with the notion that "truth is relative". Oddly, this notion was one publically promoted by the Clintons, but has its origins in Stalinism. The dangers of this concept are starkly portrayed in "1984", in which the "truth" is altered on a daily basis to insure that the party is always right. Today, dems similarly alter history to suggest that they were not pro-slavery and were not opposed to civil rights, when in fact history clearly shows this to be false.

If that is what you have been brainwashed to think, then so be it. The best I can do to offer you the facts, which I did, but you'd rather go with some partisan talking point. You can take the horse to the water, but you can't force him to drink.

in the 1930s people said there were more communist party members at Columbia university than in Russia... the world had just suffered a huge economic crash...smart people were exploring alternatives and the horrors of Stalin were yet to be known and published...many people volunteered to fight the Fascist Franco..the Communist side was considered the noble side then and still is....why not mention that Churchill said he would make favorable mention of the devil if he would help fight the Nazis.....Liberalism is NOT communism

1984 was just a reporting of what was already happening in the world with its three major powers...we in the west were being told that Communism was a monolithic power when in reality Russia and china had military skirmishes often and the nationalism for lack of a better term kept the two powers from joining together

the republican party has ALWAYS been the party of authoritarianism as you can witness right now...NOBODY will go against the party line and challenge trump...nobody yet democrats are always all over the map with the different factions within the party....so i am always amazed when dems are accused of being authoritarian

Today's Liberalism is not what it was. It is Progressiveism. Which is absolutely Totalitarian and oppressive. Hence things like more gun control laws and the concept of hate speech.
