Seriously, have you ever had the bad fortune of getting the middle seat in between two obese fatties each with their own seats? Forget about getting an armrest...although that's the least of your worries.
I'd be more worried about sitting between two insensitive jerks... but that's just me.
Are you sure it's not about people gaining too much weight: where everything just appears to be getting smaller and squished together.
Yes... as I've personally been shrinking over the last decade, I can say with 100% assurance the SPACES are getting smaller. I'm smaller now than I was in high school (17-20 years ago), and yet I'm even more uncomfortable at concerts & on airplanes, etc. How do you explain that, oh wise one?
Well, I've never considered the safety aspect, but even more interesting.
Don't worry, airplanes won't start falling from the sky because of heavy people! It's one thing if you're on a helicopter or TINY plane, but I assume commercial jets allow for a lot of extra unaccounted weight. After all, they don't weigh any passengers - big or small - so don't you think we'd already have planes crashing down? Some people look lighter than they actually are, so we'd be dropping like flies if they only accounted for a few extra pounds.
And,furthermore folks bringing their little brats onto flights screaming constantly and kicking seats, and throwing food around should be flown separately. Just why would you bring your little annoying crying all the time kid aboard? Just to **** off the rest of the passengers?
When I buy a seat I want to be able to sit in it with out the flab of another falling in on me. If a person can't contain their body within the confines of 11 seat then charge them for 2 and keep the rest of us comfortable.
It's not fair I have to squeeze next to people with BO, crying babies, sick people, long-legged people, or those who won't shut up during a cross-country flight... but that's the nature of flying, especially if you can't or won't fly first class. Sometimes you just have to suck it up & deal, which Americans in particular seem to have a problem with.
I agree -- people who are so fat they physically impose on those in the seats next to them need to suck it up and deal with the necessity of buying two tickets.

They already do. I was responding the question regarding "what if somebody fits but imposes on your space?" Again, suck it up and deal! If the airline didn't determine they should buy two seats, it's obviously not a concern for them - so I imagine some of you are just whiners.
I guess from an airlines business point of view if two cheeks are taking up two seat cushions that is occupying two spaces, thus two airline tickets.
If the body mass is just crowding the people in the next seat leaving them no free room to get comfy then the thin people should just poke them with a needle and watch them fly around the ceiling.
Just kidding.
Large people can be considerate of others or inconsiderate. It kind of depends on the attitude of the person as to whether they should be singled out.
If a large person was sitting next to me in a crowded plane and trying to not intrude on my space I wouldn't complain. If they felt like their size gave them permission and a given right to take up my space, that would be a different matter.
Do you REALLY think the airlines do this because of the weight of the baggage or as a method of getting more money from the customer while appearing to have low fares? The weight limit for overweight baggage keeps going down and yet the airplanes have not changed. Why would that be?
They charge more because lifting more than 50 lbs. is more hazardous to the employees handling the luggage - from the (potentially little) lady behind the ticket counter to the people that load and unload the cargo onto and off the planes. This increases the airlines costs because of higher rates of injuries, missed work, workers comp insurance, etc...
