Burdell - you know the answer to your own question. Lots of conservatives work for defense contractors and are receiving government workfare. Their products are not really needed but the rest of us have to buy them anyway.

I want to hear some conservatives attempt to rationalize their practices.

No, where we go wrong is in setting up a process that encourages people to depend on government instead of themselves. We have seen, as each generation becomes further away from "self responsibility" and thinking government handouts are normal, our Society is losing individual freedom and all of the strengths that self reliance/responsibility creates for each of us. We are in danger of repeating the mistake of moving into Socialism which leads to Communism that has brought such past civilizations as Rome to crumble.

There is no way to be fiscally conservative and socially liberal. That's like trying to mix oil and water.

Socially Conservatives have a big influence in the GOP, and they're too backward about gays, immigrants, non-whites..

So, a thirs party would be a good thing : fiscally conservative (low taxes, pro-business, pro-growth) and socially liberal (supporting the gay mariage, accepting more immigrants and their rights..)
It already exists...it's called the Libertarian Party.

Sorry, you cant be fiscally conservative and think the government is responsible for social engineering/justice at the same time.

The two values are mutually exclusive.
You are exactly right. Fiscally conservative and socially liberal is an oxymoron. If someone is socially liberal, they cannot be fiscally conservative, and if someone is fiscally conservative they cannot be socially liberal.

A fiscal conservative is someone who wants a government that adheres to only those powers granted to them by the US Constitution. Since social re-engineering is not a power granted to Congress by the US Constitution, a fiscal conservative would not want a single penny of the taxpayer's money spent on these unconstitutional programs. To completely disregard the US Constitution and spend taxpayer's money on unconstitutional federal social programs requires a mentally disturbed fiscal liberal.

That's not true at all. Socially liberal simply means letting people be whomever they are without hindrance. It's about keeping government and oppressive people out of the way.

Plus, the Constitution's directive to provide for the general welfare, whether interpreted as a directive on the role of taxation or more broadly building and operating programs, undermines your argument significantly.

Isn't that the problem, that people think the federal government should even have a say in the sexuality of the people, much less design an entire political party around human sexuality.
