I don't believe that all people who commit suicide have a mental illness at all.
Some, probably; but certainly not all.
It's easy to see why people generalize, but it's not a sound generalization.
Ok, you don't have to believe that. I've worked with NAMI and what they know would indicate otherwise.
ETA: Just a couple stats...do you know that those with panic disorder have a 20% likelihood of suicide, same as bipolar? Do you know that dual diagnosis is at 25%? Do you realize that having a mental illness increases suicides by X folds more than in the general population?

Shouldn't those who want to kill themselves be allowed to?
It is their body afterall.
Why they do it is not my concern,if they want to do it go right ahead.
Well, in the case of terminal illness I completely agree. In the case of mental illness, which can be treated, I do not. In fact, there is a Network out there (started off as the Hemlock society) which advocates dignity with death and two states now do this in the case of terminal illness.

I thought mental illnesses shouldn't be treated differently from physical illnesses?
I thought mental illnesses shouldn't be treated differently from physical illnesses?
Why the double standard?
The post didn't say they should be treated the same, it said they are both equally valid - mental illness can usually be treated (or at least controlled) through proper therapy and/or medication, whereas terminal physical illnesses can not. So in the case of terminal illness, there is no point in stopping them from killing themselves, but there IS a point with mental illness.
Then those with mental illnesses can kill themselves at will....it is their right.
I guess it's anyone's "right," but I guess you should see my edited post above. There ARE effective treatments for what I mention above, although dual diagnosis is much trickier.
