I saw another thread on suicides and I was curious as to what the rates are. Apparently, there is a higher rate in the Western States and a lower rate in the North Eastern States. THe theory is that people in the western states are more independent so they are less likely to ask for help...or something like that. Link attached.

Interesting data, and suprising. DC has the lowest suicide rate? If I had to live in that hell hole, I think I'd frickin shoot myself.

I find it interesting as well, although I also wonder to what degree access to services, stigma associated with seeking treatment, lower relative population density, and access to firearms (note: this is not a crack about gun control, access to firearms just increases the likelihood of a completed attempt) play into the regional differences.

I'm on my way to look for links that control for those variables (pet peeve even for sites I trust like suicide.org is not being able to look up the methodology!) and then look at geography....I'll let you know what I come up with and link if I can.

Interesting post indeed. I was surprised to see the elderly were the most likely and overwhelmingly at #1

Over 65, especially men, tend to have the highest risk and most lethal means. Sadly, I think these numbers (not percentages) are likely to go up as the Baby Boomers age, if the past few decades' trend continue.

I thnik suicaide rates can be deceiving as mnay areas often are like the past and like to use the overdose many times or accidental.

You conveniently forgot to put Canada down. Slot it underneath Ireland at 17.3 Don't want to damage fickle people's perceptions that your country is heaven?
