Are you asking for a one-dimensional argument, or atleast two? Because abrupt drop is one thing, and sustained (but not as abrupt) drop is another, with latter having a better chance of being more destructive. To make my point better, it would be wrong to assume that a 9.0 earthquake would be more destructive than a 6.0 earthquake, even considering the same location.
