I think Ford is a solid company. They need to get with it on the smaller cars though. The Focus seemed like pretty decent car, and my mom has an Escape, also decent. I had a Taurus for almost ten years, and although it was the most boring car imaginable, it was pretty reliable and got good mileage. No complaints. I cannot speak for GM overall, though I will say my Saturn is a nice little car, in comparison to my Jeep, which is a complete POS.
It is good that Obama bailed out the auto industry, don't you think?
No, nor was it good that Bush/Obama initiated TARP to bail out the financial institutions, IMO. I would rather have had the instant pain than the compounded $Trillions in debt and worse pain to follow for my and the next two generations. Obviously, as an old guy, you don't really care about those who will be affected. You can just sit back and collect your government check while prosthelytising the false virtues of Socialism.
this is only partly true. ford did mortgage nearly all of their assets to get the funds needed to weather the looming crisis, but that didnt mean that the other automakers couldnt do the same thing. the fact is that they should also have lined up money for the future like ford did, because if they had they would not have gone through bankruptcy, and they would not have had to beg for money from the government.
That was my point. The others couldn't do the same thing, because of the credit crisis. IMO, if the credit crisis didn't happen, GM and Chrysler would have done the same thing Ford did, and we wouldn't have needed to bail them out.

but your assessment was wrong. ford lined up their credit and loans before the credit crisis hit, because allan mullaly saw what was going on, and took action to save ford. gm and chrysler could have, and should have, done the same thing at the same time ford did, two years BEFORE the credit crunch hit. all the signs were there, just that gm and chrysler execs ignored them.

That's a fair argument, but not everyone's crystal ball is equally as clear. Hindsight is 20/20, and all that.
