An innocent man jailed for 17 years after being wrongfully convicted of rape will not get any compensation for the time he spent behind bars - but he has been given a $111,000 bill for backdated child maintenance payments.[LEFT]

So the man is wrongfully convicted and then the state wants him to them back for support for the mother of his children while they wrongfully convicted him. WoW

Wow, that sure stinks! At least the state waived its share of Northrop's balance due to them.

Sue the state for the wrongful conviction.

This getting hit with back child support after 17 years of serving a wrongful imprisonment is batchit crazy.

While the law that prevents wrongfully convicted prisoners from suing unless they can show intentional misconduct is outrageously unfair, those children are still his and he does owe them something for their support all those years. Granted, he couldn't do anything about it while imprisoned, but the state waived their portion and he's now only obligated to pay $100 a month, which, frankly, shouldn't be that much of a hardship.

The only part of this story that sucks is that he can't be compensated for being wrongfully denied his freedom for so long. But apparently that will change with this new bill, and he may only be obligated for his back child support until 2014, which is just a couple of years away.

I feel horrible for him and wish him well. At least he seems to have support now that he's out!

Hey, thanks for all the compassion Jill61.

Yep, nothing else about their wrongful convition and imprisonment sucks.

Being deprived of their families and friends for 17 years doesn't suck.

Being labled rapists doesn't suck.

Sitting in a filthy stinking prison while the best years of their lives slowly tick by doesn't suck.

Wrongfully convicted, spent 17 years in a nasty smelly prison,
find out you're getting released, you're thinking you're going to receive
some kind of compensation but you end up having to pay for "child support".

wow luck isn't on this man side.
