It's been illegal to deface currency for many, many years.

Not looking to deface it. Looking to transform it to something useful and it will never enter circulation again. Defacing implies that I intend to place it back into circulation after alteration. I may be merely looking to make copper piping or to construct a bar of copper that looks nothing like currency.

Because it's not really yours. You think it is but it's not. It's the property of the USG and they just let you use it to barter with.

I don't see anything on the coin signifying it as such.

Also, I can continue to barter with it after melting it down.

This has been most helpful. Now I know where to file this "law"...the same place one files the "law" on reporting income on private barter transactions.

When I was a kid in the 50s, Me and Johhny Wilson used to put pennies on the rails of the shipyard cranes then drill a small hole through them and sell them at the local bar for a nickel. We tried the same thing with trains but ended up with a copper grease spot on the track.

Government doesnt like the idea that you might melt down real valued metal in a coin of which would then question the Federal Reserve System and the coining of money of actual VALUE!
Paper is not money its only money because the federal reserve and US treasury made it the only Legal currency.
The constitution says only gold and silver is considered legal tender.
If you believe the FED was allowed to print our money based on community valued coins in the 1930's backed by gold and silver then how about we do a audit of the FED and see how much Gold is in Fort Knox and where our money really comes from and its value.
Currently we print money we have no real assets other then the TRUST and interest to banks on the backs of working Americans to be slaves to the system and the IRS.
This is the biggest scam in history and the government as long as it keeps a high interest rate and its socialist ways.... banks run this country.
The US treasury us to print its money for FREE with no interest to a bank and the concept of a balanced budget and borrowing for government spending in times of peace or war was in check when a government was limited and fiscally responsible.
