Ben Bernanke sure knows how to deflate a football game.
At the end of his appearance at the National Press Club today, the Federal Reserve Board chairman was asked who he was rooting for in this weekend’s Super Bowl. The superb politician that he is, Bernanke dodged the question.
But as a parting crack, he said he knew one thing about the weekend’s festivities. Holding up his hand in the shape of an “O,” he said: “GDP during those three hours will drop to zero.”

Better to kill GDP for three hours than risk killing a currency forever.

Ummm... As opposed to our GDP for three hours on any given Sunday evening? I mean, if the Super Bowl was on a Monday at noon I could see his point but I doubt the Super Bowl is going to traumatically alter the GDP from, say, last Sunday.

GDP drops to 0 during those three hours?

He hasn't had to go to the store for a last minute sauce has he? What about all of the commercials that cost 3 million dollars for a 30 second add? What about the 150,000 people who are at the stadium buying drinks, food, etc.

I know he was just joking, but the GDP isn't going to drop to 0 for three hours.
