If you aren't passing in Germany, you automatically know to get your butt out of the left lane. Americans act like spoiled punks on the highway. It drives me nuts. Here in Arizona, our speed limit is fairly high, but Texans and Californians have zero respect for the lane laws when driving through this state. I just wanna choke the hell out of them when they drive 100 miles straight in the left lane.

Arizona doesn't have that great a scenery that lends itself to anything other than drive as fast as you can to get out of the state.

Wrong. You can be in the left lane to pass someone.
Everyone has seen cars sitting in the left lane with 6 cars behind them matching the speed of the car in the right lane with the sole intent of not letting people by.
I sometimes think just what the hell is going on in the brains of these people (if anything). I'll try to see when I pass if it is some oblivious old person, an idiot on a cell phone, a teen, or whoever.

american lane discipline is atrociously poor compared to germans. then again, its a function of our lax licensing laws compared to germany's or say a finland's.
"A passing lane is often colloquially referred to as a fast lane because it is often used for extended periods of time for through traffic or fast traffic. In theory, a passing lane should be used only for passing, thus allowing, even on a road with only two lanes in each direction, motorists to travel at their own pace."
In other words if you're driving the speed limit in the left lane and you're not passing anyone you should still get out of the way so that others can go by you. IT'S THE LAW, learn it.

§ 46.2-804. Special regulations applicable on highways laned for traffic.
Whenever any roadway has been divided into clearly marked lanes for traffic, drivers of vehicles shall obey the following:
1. Any vehicle proceeding at less than the normal speed of traffic at the time and place and under the conditions existing, shall be driven in the lane nearest the right edge or right curb of the highway when such lane is available for travel except when overtaking and passing another vehicle or in preparation for a left turn or where right lanes are reserved for slow-moving traffic as permitted in this section;
Note the term "speed of traffic", if traffic is speeding at 75, that means you have to get over if you are doing 70.

Sorry in Virginia it IS the LAW and you are WRONG, that law is universal throughout Virginia therefore you're breaking the law by driving in the passing lane without passing anyone no matter what speed you're driving.
