The "melting pot" theory is now the "salad bowl" theory.
And that theory is that one does not need to assimilate and that we can all co-exist happily without adapting and acquiring a common culture/language.

It's considered more "politically correct" to let cultures keep their identities.
Critics say it keeps a people divided rather than united and pits various cultures against each other with regards to politics. Seems like they are right.

Do you think a major American Political Leader would be so bold as to make this statement about what is happening in America. (A balkanized society, especially outside the workplace)

Should we admit as a nation that multiculturalism has failed as America has become more ethnically and culturally diverse? Or do you believe that multiculturalism is a great success both here and in Europe?
Yes. It has devided us.

Multiculturalism has and is failing miserably in the US. The politically correct attempt to please everybody has only served to divide and further alienate people. The newcomers need to assimilate and blend into the society they claim they wish to be a part of rather than insist on maintaining their old culture and values and demanding that their new country adjust itself and adapt to their ways. The arrogance of demanding to be accommodated in their native language rather than learn the language spoken hear is but one example.

It's a lot more successful in the U.S. than it's been in most of Europe. Most immigrants to the U.S. - even the ones that some people don't like - consider themselves to be Americans, which is different from the way many immigrants feel in Europe.

No. We are a nation of immigrants and have have been since our start.

I teach early elementary. I have a diverse classroom with black, white, and brown skinned children from many different types of backgrounds. Almost of them are into the same music, sports, clothing, and trends.

I agree. Look what multiculturalism brought Yugoslavia, when two totally different people tried to co-exist together. It seems like much of Europe, especially the northern and central countries, are having trouble feeling comfortable around lots of Muslims as well, in addition to different Europeans moving around into other countries.

That's exactly what the problem is. The official government policy across the EU is, let's use Britain as an example, to let the Pakistani immigrants feel like they are Pakistani Muslims living in another country. That they encourage the immigrants to not assimilate. I think that wasn't the intention of the governments, but the unintended consequence is that it makes the immigrants feel marginalized from mainstream society
