It's a darned if you do, darned if you don't situation for him. He's been putting out presidential feelers. If he backs the plates, he'll be crucified in the general election. If he doesn't back it, he'll be crucified by R voters in the southern states. No wonder he's straddling the fence. I think this situation puts him in a spot where he can't win no matter what he does, so...another potential R presidential contender bites the dust...
This is why Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani do not have a chance either. You cannot be an accepted Republican party member if you reside in a place where sophistication is prevelent.
...you are making accusations that have never been proven....
So the survivors were all lying then?

he did not found the KKK
You're right, I misspoke. He didn't found the KKK, he was one of their earlier members, was one of their earliest leaders, and was still a member when they turned violent.

it was the Civil War and war is not pretty...
And yet somebody else in this thread seems to justify Forrest being on a license plate because General Sherman engaged in war crimes fighting for the North.

and as far as this license plate goes, this is for the citizens of South Carolina to decide..and the Governors comments one way or the other mean nothing...
Mississippi, not South Carolina. Let's make sure we get our state right before we start making comments like that.
And beyond that, the governor's comments certainly does make a difference - for a license plate to become approved, the proposal will need the signature of the governor. He refuses to say that he won't support it.
Beyond that, at some point please realize that you can end a sentence with a single period. Going from thought to thought with non-stop ellipses makes it seem like you're writing in a stream of consciousness and not thinking things through at all.
His state wants to produce liscense plates commemorating a leader of a notorious hate group.
He is the Governor- He has to take a stance against this.
I presume the Black taxpayers of Mississippi will be paying for the manufacturing of the liscense plates.
Barbour is refusing to take sides which is better than the Dems electing and re-electing a long time member of the KKK, Byrd, who they continue see as one of their most charished senators.

Refusing to take sides against a person and symbol of hatred is not an option I or any other intelligent person would pursue.

Are you incapable of making a post without trying to bring irrelevancies into the discussion? Deflect, deflect, deflect. This thread is about Haley Barbour refusing to say he will not support an effort to get a license plate in honor of a Confederate general that led a massacre at Fort Pillow and was an early leader of the KKK.

if the Gov has to sign off on it..then I suppose you will know at that time what his decision is..won't you...

No one likes the punctuation, spelling and grammar police. I may disagree with his post as well, but you don't need to rip apart someone's writing style to make your point clearly. It's not nice, and it makes your argument look petty. Your point is more effective if you just let it stand on it's own without personal attacks.

Not a troll thread. I came across the story and felt it needed to be discussed. We'll leave it at that.
The KKK is a racist group of haters hell bent on sending any person who is not White anglo Saxon Protestant out of the country.
Somehow they believe the lands of America are theirs even though their ancestors slaughtered native Americans to steal their resources.
Again you prove your ignorance as to the KKK in its infancy and that which it is now associated as it came to be known for in the mid-1900s leading up to the civil rights movement. Suggest you actually read up on some of that politically incorrect, yet factual history that is not being taught by liberal agenda minded public schools, and actually educate yourself.
