The teachers just said they'll take HUGE wage concessions--that blows your greedy worker theory right out of the water. They just want the right to bargain in a meaningful way for the terms and conditions of their profession. That's why you see tens of thousands of people at the capital now--it's not over pay. It's over basic rights. This isn't going to go away, and it's just going to get bigger.
You're still not understanding. Unionization is not a "right." It is part of the problem. State funds are held hostage when public workers are allowed to unionize. They say they'll take concessions now but in a year or two, they'll be demanding more and more. That's how unions work.
G*d, a public referendum every time a contract came due would cost way more than collective bargaining.
Criminy, we read posts from these hard-core RWs (not you) about how everyone should negotiate with their boss for raises, blah, blah, blah, but then the public employees should never get anything more than a COL raise? Not even for doing a great job? Call me
I'm beginning to feel like a hard-core RW on this issue.
Do you think it's unfair to have teachers and other public sector jobs capped by the consumer price index?
Wasn't that the reasoning behind offering public employees greater perks e.g. health insurance, pensions - in the first place, because their salaries needed to be capped for the fiscal responsibility of a state budget.
I can not understand why public sector employees are unionized. It simply does not represent all the citizens of a state from a fiscal/taxation stand point.
You know what they say when doctors go on strike?
The death rate goes down Maybe if the teachers
strike long enough - our kids will get smarter

It is a right. Freedom of association. Freedom of assembly and protest.
Why didn't Walker include the police and firefighters for ending their collective bargaining rights as well?
Because they whine about "putting the public at risk" for anything. The cops whined about that when it came time to put up a 4 day furlough for them like the rest of the city workers..."it'll put citizens at risk". Total BS. Oh, & they also supported Walker in his campaign for governor. Now, why do you think they haven't been included?
The avg is about 56k but with bennies, it is close to 100k. They are doing a very valuable job, and a lot of people think they deserve more. But, they are willing to adjust for these times. They are willing to compromise. The politician is not willing to compromise, because his aim is other than budget, pure and simple.
Valuable job, my butt. 60+% dropout rate, failing schools, crappy test scores.... Don't try to spin it.
Casper you are wrong yet again. This has been discussed to death now. The average wage plus benefits for FY 2011 will be just over $100k. Find a real source with real facts.
Conservatives don't whine about getting more services. Conservatives don't generally *need* services aside from public safety measures. Conservatives want fewer services since we know they can't be paid for when we get our way with lower taxes.
You are saying that Conservatives don't want:
Medicare
social security
maintained roads
police and fire protection
potable drinking water
national security
educated citizens
safe food
public health measures
911 service
evaluation and licensing of professionals such as doctors, nurses.....
safe drugs and medical devices
courts and justice
penitentiaries
national guard
etc..........?
