In addition to the Republican attempts to eliminate or reduce collective bargaining rights for public workers unions in various states around the country, the US House of Representatives also attempted to take up legislation on Thursday to defund the National Labor Relations Board--the independent government agency charged with mediating disputes between management and labor. Defunding the NLRB would essentially cripple the ability of the labor movement to function in this country.
To the great surprise of the Republican leadership, 60 Republicans--a full quarter of those in the House--voted with the Democrats to easily defeat the proposal. I think perhaps the R leadership--both governors and the House leadership, have overplayed their hands on this one, because they sure don't have their own people behind them.
I also think it's a great day in Washington when members of Congress are actually voting their conscience vs. just voting as they're told. Why didn't Boehner see this one coming?

LOL, the lefties need to make up their minds. When Republicans vote as a block they are mindless and controlled by ladership. When they vote differently than leadership there is a spilt. Please get back to us when you have made up tour collective minds.

I'm not a leftie, and I was an R for 30 years. Labor and the R's have never been best buddies, but an all out attack like this would have never been considered even 10 years ago, because it was always understood that even if you didn't like it, there was still a legitimate place for different voices in the democratic process. Votes like this give me hope that maybe there still are a chunk of more moderate, reasonable voices left in the R party--people like me--vs. the radical extremism we're seeing now from some of them. Good for them. I hope they take my party back so I can come home.

You keep insisting you are not a leftie but if it walks like a duck, and talks like a duck.............
Labor has never been a friend to the American people, it deserves prominent blame for many of the ills of the country. Poor education and a weak economy.

So I'm a leftie because I think people should have the right to form unions, and I don't think they're always a bad thing? LOL--you kind of glossed over my repeated support for cuts in the corporate tax rate and deficit reduction, but then that doesn't fit into the mode some of you operate in--when you can't win on the issues, make a personal attack and label someone! Everybody knows the game here, lol.
Sixty other republicans in the House agree with me--I guess that makes a quarter of the House Republican's lefties as well? Huh
I guess some of you should get hopping on Bachmann's plan to root out members of the House and Senate with "unAmerican" ideas (at least according to the far right) because we seem to have some independent thinkers in the R party who are starting to get fed up as well--just like me.
I think we're finally seeing the beginning of a meltdown in the R party between the crazy radical right and the moderates. It's time it happened. I'm proud of them.

LOL, where were you in Novemeber. A political party is melting down, but it aint the Republicans.
And of course as I pointed out the Republicans who voted against the measure voted their conscience, good for them. It is the attempt to paint this as a split, or root for the demise of the Republican party is a left dream, but only that, a dream.
So called moderates make me laugh, everybody thinks their views are moderate. There is no such thing as a moderate.

Here's where you make your biggest mistake--you take the vote in November as a complete endorsement of the radical end of the R party's platform--what are the odds that support like that explains the huge number of more moderate swing voters who came out in November? If they supported the R's on everything, they'd be R's already. The R's made a very general argument about the economy that resonated with voters, and they had a "throw the bums out" election over the economy. If you think that translates into solid support for everything you stand for, I think you're going to be unpleasantly surprised. I've always said the undoing of the R's will be if they come out strongly on radical social conservative issues, and I think that day is here. They finally went too far, and the middle class is TICKED. We'll see what happens.

And with that, I'm heading out of town with kids.
Too funny, anything you don't agree with is radical right. Reducing deficits, isn't radical right. Yes the middle class is ticked. They are ticked that they have been affected by the downturn in the economy, yet public employees have been shielded from any of the unpleasantness. The middle class is ticked our education system is sub par and the teachers solution is to spend more money. Guess what, there isn't more money. And of course spending more money will not improve educatoin outcomes.
NJ is proof positive that the American people have had it with the selfishness of the public employee unions. Chris Christie took them on, and beat them. his popularity in one of the bluest states in the country has never been higher.
Enjoy your trip with your kids.
