Throw them into alternative education and then vocational school.
Don't discard them; at least give them skills to make their way in the world.

Everyone cannot go to college, no matter what the politicans tell you.
Bring back the vocational track.

We are on par with Latvia folks. Does that make you feel good about our future ?
Countries like Singapore are leading the pack and teachers there have 40 kids in a class and they manage.

We need to get politics and PC feel good OUT OF THE CLASSROOMS and get cracking at those books. Hold that bar, fail them, retain them if necessary; no more social passing.
There is a term for this told to me by teachers. It's "pass the trash".

Once again, education starts in the home. The problems lie in the home.

There is also the problem of teachers with tenure that just want to collect the paycheck and benefits.

One way to fix the problem is in early education. Let the parents know that their child is exhibiting exceptional ability. Sometimes that is the wake up call that parents need to get on their kids and stay on them.

Another way is to get rid of tenure. Reward good teachers and get rid of the bad.

The everyone's a winner attitude got us in this mess in education in the first place. That's a huge problem.

Our school system did away with honors classes in middle school because the middle school as a whole was failing and they thought that if they mixed the kids up, the higher performing ones would influence the lower performing. The result: All of the kids are learning much less now. They had to dumb down the lessons. It's a joke. The higher performing kids are bored and know full well they are not being taught anything.

You just stated why education in America is failing today. Because the parents are failing the kids. It's not the school system. We keep throwing more money at it and there's no improvement. Education starts at home, and if a kid has a good home environment, they will succeed in learning, even if the school has little resources.

You are right. We as parents need to demand education for our kids and unfortunately there are not enough good parents in any one district to band together and do it.

It's just a vicious cycle.

Nope. You can have the best school in the country, and then integrate it with kids from a nearby inner city who attend a failing school, and the city kids still fail in this new school, while in the process drag the entire school down. This is the reality. Like I said, you can throw all the money you want at education, but it'll be wasted unless the kids are taught, AT HOME, to take advantage of it.

No, you need to demand school readiness from your communities.
You need to educate fellow parents that they have to encourage their kids and monitor their kids and actually care that their kids go to school, do their homework and TRY to become an educated adult.

Remember..parents are the child's first teacher.

Then we should obviously start "throwing the money" at the home instead.

I really have a problem referring to anyone as "trash".

This couldn't be any closer to the truth. Teaching your kids to "learn" comes before they hit preschool. From birth to 5 years is very important, it’s the time when children are forming a base (roots) for learning and how life is.
In my opinion
It’s the parent’s fault, if their child is a dumb-ass. It’s the parent’s responsibility to educate their children; the public school system is a tool for the citizens of whatever country they live in. But there goes that word that some folks think only pertains to others, "RESPONSIBILITY".
If YOUR kid is failing then YOU are failing, not the school but you, you are responsible in everyway for your child not the school or government!

Yes, that would be a start, educate the adults who have children, teach the adults to be more responsible, to be active, to be a part of their child's life and quit pawning them (and their duties) off on the local school system.
This isn't a quick fix, quick fixes got us here.
