Yeah, god forbid they wear surgical masks when they are sick because they don't want to pass on the sickness to people they don't even know. Damn Chinese and their respecting of their fellow citizens. I much prefer riding the train of death, or more commonly known as the LIRR, where people are coughing and hacking all over me. It adds character.

Too bad the Chinese Government didn't follow our President and demand that the president of a sovereign nation (Egypt) step aside. Damn Chinese not meddling in other peoples affairs.

I really do hate to get in on the teacher bashing threads but....

the assertions being made about how the Chinese have a great system are simply the most ridiculous statements i've seen made here on citydata. (here comes the "I never said great")

I notice there is not much immigration to this purported Chinese economic/educational paradise!!!

Claiming that the Chinese middle class has it better than America's just makes all your other statements more questionable in my view....and yes repression does matter.

and finally No, I do not feel like arguing with some idiot who refuses to see China for what it is. You are like the Communists of the 1950's who imagined Stalin's USSR as a worker's paradise.("Gulags and secret police don't matter..") We definitely have problems here but the grass is not always greener.

There is a DIFFERENCE between private-sector and public-sector unions.

Chinese not meddling......hah....the Chinese have been proping up North Korea for years. Ask North Koreans if the Chinese are morally superior...oh wait those who haven't starved to death are not allowed to answer

You should be embarassed by your show of willful ignorance

Funny, the very people who like to accuse those of us on the left side of the aisle of being socialists are now trumpeting the virtues communist China. And you complain about the alleged redistribution of wealth in the U.S? Really? Or is this thinking inspired by ma huang?

Actually, see above. They wear masks to filter their polluted air. Also, clearly you've never been to China. Years ago I thought about teaching English there. When a friend came back after doing so, I nixed that idea. Not only do they not cover their mouths or use handkerchiefs or tissues, they hock up phlegm onto the floor indoors. When she blew her nose into a handkerchief, her students thought it was funny. "Why do you want to keep that?" She was sick nearly the whole time, and she said there were days where the air was so polluted, it looked like twilight the entire day.

The rest of your post is partisanship on a national level. Suffice to say that if you thought the war in Iraq was a good idea, you're a hypocrite of the highest caliber.

Again with the Ad Hom, Yz. No one said anything about the quality of air or SARS or workers' rights of the poor population in China. This is all off topic -- woody intimated that without unions, we'd all be condemned to 16 hour work shifts, like it is in China. That is just not the case; Of course you have a large portion of the population that is poor and uneducated that is subjected to this, while at the same time there is a thriving, educated, middle-upper class in China. If we had 1.4 Billion people, I'm sure the same thing would be going on in the US. In fact, it already is going on here to an extent. (dual income slaves here in NY and meat-packers or shoe salesmen working 2-3 jobs to raise a family in the middle of 'poor' America).

For those that receive an education, they are thriving in China and Hong Kong. Again, this is irrelevant - the topic is the antiquated and flawed union systems we have in place on LI and in the US..and yes, they are destroying this country. Nassau county is bankrupt and facing huge deficits and people are losing their homes due to the high tax burden(s), because the unions won't budge and the PBA requires $202k total median pay for each officer. Same goes for the Teachers Union - Especially in Suffolk, where many districts (see here) are going to get crushed because the TU decided to pay above the taxpayers' means. They took advantage of taxpayers and squandered the aid they were receiving from NYS on their $100k median salaries + lucrative pensions and full bennies. So who suffers now? Of course, Not the TU, but the students and the taxpayers.

We've gone over this a million times already. Public Unions are unsustainable, taxpayer-leaching, ponzi schemes; disguised as "for the people" or "for the middle class", when it's really "F_ _ K the taxpayers, it's for the unions" and that's it.

My point, which you clearly missed, is that in the communist utopia you seem to aspire to, people suffer worse than they suffer here. Sorry, you'll have to sell the idea somewhere else. I'm not buying it.

That is your opinion. You can proclaim it all you want. That does not give it any more authority than that of anyone else here, including me. I think you are wrong, and that's it.

Believe me Yizz, it's more than just my opinion. This country is waking up to reality.. unions have lost all credibility.
