Cincinnati, OH (January 21, 2011) – A group of Cincinnati Public Schools employees today filed a federal lawsuit against a local union and the city school district for illegally confiscating union dues from their paychecks in violation of their constitutional rights.

My experience, if you hire on at a union workplace, you must join and pay an initiation fee.
If a place you are working gets union representation, you go along and join or seek employment elsewhere.
They are only "forced" if they join a unionized school. My mistake on that. If you don't like unions then find a school system that lets you opt out. Simple as that.
