But it is not imposed by the governments of the countries they live in

First Hamas rules over the equivalent of a US county and not a country. That being said one rabbi makes a decision for all to follow in Kiryat Joel or Bnei Brak or Williamsburg. Just google the modesty police in any of those areas. Look up shomer negiah & yichud.

Hamas wants to impose this rule on every Muslim in Gaza without freedom of choice.

This is not imposing. Hamas was elected into the positions thay have in Gaza. The people chose them so the people are stuck with their decisions. Hamas is like any other Arab leadership in that region. They can do almost anything they want and the UN will say and do nothing. Look at threads on CD, except for the riots over the past few weeks, arab threads barely get touched. no one cares that Iran is hanging citizens every 12 hours or that Dubai publically whipped someone for heavy kissing in public.
So why pick on something that was the excepted norm in the US upwards of the early 70's. Men went to Barbers and Women went to Stylists and you never found the other gender in either place.
Lets just get one simple fact through: Hamas & Fatah (formerly PLO) do not represent the majority. Arabs in Israel would prefer to live their lives and move forward. The people need a new leadership that represents them. Its the only way they can move forward.
In 2005 Gaza was the litmus test for self rule. Economic aid was in place for them to build a new future and be similar to Puerto Rico is to the US. All the Jews were gone and a new day was starting. Most people celebrated their new freedom. But what did their leadership do within hours after the last Israeli was out - they started shooting missles at a Jewish town.
I don't think it sinks in to numerous people on this board: Israelis want the missles to stop and at that point the Arabs in Gaza can do whatever they want. Its really is that simple. Forget all the big wars. These countries do not care about Palestinian plight. Its a land grab.
