I have met some bad teachers. However, I assure you they are the exception, not the norm.

Their pay dosn't come off the backs of taxpayers that frequently make far less than they do.

Our public employees, teachers in particular, need a wake up call as to what the real world is like.

They may very well work longer, but not 30%. Remember, teachers have inservice in the summer. They can also be relied to put in a great deal of time on weekends. In the end it all adds up.

I think you should sit in a public classroom and see what their real world is like. You'll be expected to educate your students (30 x 6) while dealing with students who are addicted to drugs, alcohol, victims of rape, disruptive and very inattentive. How many days have you sat in a classroom, just answer the question?? Or is it easier to sit back and judge?
I was an elementary teacher. While I've never had a student addicted to drugs I've experienced all the rest. It's heartbreaking. It's the children of the addicts that get you the most. It goes home with you.

Give teachers a break!
Then let's eliminate tenure, develop ways of assessing teachers' effectiveness, and pay them accordingly.

Essentially being a foster parent for kids with very little support or care at home. Spending your summers in a classroom paying for your own continuing education (required by law) in addition to a voluntary masters that helps you more effectively teach your students. The tradeoff--when a child GETS IT, and they do something they didn't think they could do before. When they become excited about learning, and they're inspired to do more. That's why teachers do what they do, evidently with zero thanks.

You know what my mom used to do (and my family still does?) Buy winter coats, socks, shoes, you name it, and miraculously have them appear in the classroom as an "accident," just as miraculously in the right size (someone left this--why don't you keep it so it isn't thrown away?) for kids whose parents couldn't or wouldn't provide them. It happens a lot more often than you think.

Yeah--teachers--they're greedy "elites."
You are correct in most of what you've indicated here. Most teachers are pretty good folks who do try hard. I'm less than happy about the unions tho. I can't say I'm a supporter of them.

Tenure doesn't mean you cannot get fired. It simply means you cannot be fired for trivial things. You need to be careful about this. My first principle was a lesbian who absolutely hated men. It wasn't a pleasant experience.
