Looks like the Repubs are backing down on some of their runaway cutting and the Dems are willing to meet them halfway to keep the government running for a while longer. Interesting reading:

It's encouraging. I think that with a little tweaking, they can get it done. But, it only pushes a possible shutdown back two weeks.

Still, the longest journey begins with a single step, and this seems a reasonable step to me.

It is a good horse trade, the {R}s get some cuts and the {D}s get some more time. We all know the reality that it is going to be tough for the {R}s to get the 61 billion in cuts. The only way that can take place is to get some {D}s on board. If that does materialize Obama will have a hard choice to make and the question will be does he really want to make cuts or is that lip service.

The real test will be the freshmen repubs in the house.

Will they throw a fit and force the speaker and other repubs to go against them?
If they do, they are getting a lot of ammunition for the future teaparty candidates.
This week will be interesting in the house.

What I would like to know is, with a 3 plus trillion dollar annual budget, how is it even remotely difficult to cut only 61 billion?

They aren't backing down.

Two week extension, meanwhile, they've including billions in cuts from obama's future budget that will not get passed.

Exactly, the Republicans had the Dems in a box. They had to accept the cuts or be made to look unreasonable. Look how old Harry Reid changed his tune.

Democrats Warm To GOP's Short-Term Budget Cuts

""The Republicans' so-called compromise is nothing more than the same extreme package the House already handed the Senate, just with a different bow. This isn't a compromise, it's a hardening of their original position. This bill would simply be a two-week version of the reckless measure the House passed last weekend," Jon Summers, a spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), said at the time."

Two days later, once he realized he made a mistake, he said this.

"Senate Democrats applauded the short-term plan, with Reid's office calling it "a modified version of what Democrats were talking about." "

Yes, I am sure that the Repubs will add their cuts to border security in the next one, while of-course still whinning that the Dems do not care about border security. What a bunch of Hypocrites the right-wingers really are.

^ this

This is the first time I heard of "runaway cuts" from a poster, sort of a twist on runaway spending I suppose. Sort of like trying to make cuts seem as evil as irresponsible spending. The force is not strong in this one.
