They did carve out the exception for screaming fire in a movie theater.
Maybe for grave sites and services people should also not be able to scream stuff? Just saying.

I think that the WBC does cross a major ethical line that is in fact beating up and anguishing people regarding recently deceased loved ones. A tiny exception could be due at this time.

They can go to court endlessly because they are families of lawyers who can go represent themselves.

I agree, nobody should have to be silent, including Westboro Baptist, however, perhaps the argument that could be used is that their screaming is something like DTP or prohibiting somebody else's right to peaceably assemble. They can speak, hold signs outside on public property, but screaming to interfere with a service they cannot.

As despicable as these people are, we cannot ban freedom of speech even for this. As another poster stated, its too slippery a slope on too important a freedom.

Have to come up with other solutions. Community support has worked in some cases, where the whole town comes out and builds a wall of people to protect the mourners. Perhaps less media coverage rather than more would help this group of mostly family members, fade away?

Or tell the media to set up at least a mile away and see if that drawls the crazies far enough away from the church or cemetery.

I'm liking this idea. A Quiet Zone.

You made another excellent point because here in CA you have no right to have your windows down and blast the radio.
If a cop can hear your car playing a radio from over 60 feet away they can legally fine you.

Well, they are part of the nation, right?

Why don't they go flog themselves as punishment. You know..set an example...put their 'dimes' where their mouths are.

The SCOTUS has ruled in favor 8 to 1 to support freedom of all speech, even the despicable kind that comes from Westboro Baptist. I actually agree with the Supreme Court but not the church if you follow my logic. Do you agree with the Court's decision?
As awful as these people are if they are obeying the local laws, it is their to be a jerk

Freedom of speech has to be extended to the unpopular point of view, or it isn't freedom at all. The Soops got it right on this one.
