Calling someone who dislikes homosexuality, a homophobe, is inaccurate.
Fear is not in the equation. Revulsion is closer, but not as visceral.
It is not the person, but the act, I abhor. Hate is inaccurate, far from it,
it is closer to sadness and pity. I feel sorry for the individual.
Very nice people, can do horrendous things, when they are confused or
mislead.
Fear certainly is in the equation.
You're right that one can merely "dislike" homosexuality and not be a homophobe. I never claimed that disliking homosexuality makes one a homophobe. I've talked to plenty of people who say "I find homosexuality icky and I dislike it, but that's no reason to deny them equal civil rights. To each his own."
Often people who "dislike" homosexuals take it much further - they actively seek to repress and discriminate (by supporting and passing laws banning gays from accessing the legal rights of a civil marriage contact, banning them from military service, etc). You only do that if you fear the consequences of not doing so (no matter how irrational those fears are).
Merely disliking homosexuality does not make one a homophobe. Disliking and fearing homosexuality so much that you actively seek to repress its acceptance and discriminate against homosexuals certainly makes you a homophobe.

Wrong. Fear has nothing to do with it. A sense of moral propriety is the motivating force.
There is also a huge difference between discrimination and seeking to repress acceptance.

Are you fearful of a situation that dismisses your moral standing?
