"Obama started the debate last month by saying too much budget-cutting "could endanger the recovery" and a shutdown "would be destabilizing. People don't get their Social Security checks. They don't get their veterans payments. Basic functions shut down," Obama said at a news conference after unveiling his 2012 budget. "That, also, would have an adverse effect on our economic recovery."

Here's how a federal government shutdown would affect you

"Social Security checks would still be issued, the mail would be delivered, Fort Knox soldiers would remain at their posts and the McAlpine Dam and the Louisville's Veterans Hospital would be open."

"Veterans: In the past, veterans received their benefits checks, but some advocacy groups worried about delays in a shutdown this time. A Lebanon VA Medical Center spokesman referred calls to Veterans Administration offices in Washington, which were not returned. But in the past, people caring for admitted patients and emergency patients continued to work. But some veterans’ services were curtailed, including health care. "

Social Security is safe in a federal shutdown

What happens to Social Security if the government shuts down?

"People don't get their Social Security checks." That was President Obama at a press conference last week. And this is Harry Reid, the top Democrat in the Senate, in a statement on Tuesday: "A shutdown could ... mean no Social Security checks for seniors." The Democrats are saber rattling, hoping to portray Republicans as irresponsible. And the claim has been repeated by other top Democrats. Here's the rub: It doesn't appear to be true. During the last major shutdown, which lasted about a month starting in late 1995, the Social Security Administration mailed checks throughout the crisis, and a close reading of established law makes clear the agency has the legal authority to do so again."

Federal shutdown: Social Security checks won't stop - Feb. 23, 2011

Saber rattling? How about lying and fear mongering? Why isn't the media confronting the President, Harry Reid and the other Democrats on their "misspeaking" or is that too much to expect?

The government shut down once before under Clinton so we do have some history on what would actually happen. We know what stops and what doesn't.

A governement "shutdown" is far from a shutdown.
But the government knows the American people; they know that Americans will take the headlines as they are published and do no investigation or reading about it.

Just look at the many posts here in this forum and these are the supposedly "enlightened" people.
Imagine those that do not pay attention to politics ?

What do you think seniors fear more...President Obama's forecast of shut-downs hurting seniors or Congressional proposals cutting seniors benefits?

Quote:
Proposals for major cuts in Social Security, floated by deficit commission co-chairs Alan Simpson and Erskine Bowles last week,...

...One of the proposals is to cut Social Security benefits by changing the cost-of-living adjustment formula. That would start in 2012, so it would hit current as well as future beneficiaries.

All I cna say is, it's very foolish to rely on Social Security for your retirement. Save now, don't go on spending binges thinking that Social Security will comfortably cover your retirement. It probably won't, especially if you are under 40

More fear mongering about the President and the democrats. BTW, it is up to the President to decide which services the government can continue, depending on the funds available at disposal if the government is shut down. The President is unlikely to put the seniors and the most needy at risk, but that doesn't guarantee that it won't affect a lot of people.

As for such shutdowns affecting recovery, it takes ignorance to dismiss the idea that it certainly will. Having said that, a person's fear stems from emotional reasons (irrational fear) and from logical reasons. If you think fear, think rationally.

See, you are repeating the same thing as the president about healthcare. The president is very careful to tell everyone he's not going to cut their benefits. BUT, treatment and benefits are not the same things. While the president has been very careful to speak in terms of not cutting benefits, some of the older members of the public are swallowing it as not cutting treatment. That's not what he's saying.

Hypothetical example: A 30 year old athlete and his grandma can both be covered (benefits) under government healthcare for bad knees but the government may allow surgery for the athlete and grandma may get pain medicine for the same health problem. The President can always say, "I didn't cut your benefits" and that would be technically correct since "bad knees" are covered but that doesn't mean your treatment wasn't cut if you are grandma. When I hear the Democrats use the words "we're not cutting/rationing treatment" maybe I'll think there's a reason not to be afraid.

But that of course has nothing to do with lying about seniors not getting their social security checks if there's a government shutdown. I just want more media people than the CNN business website to make it public.

What is sad is that Social Security is OUR MONEY the Gov uses. They tell us when we can get it and how much we can make after we are collecting it! Something wrong with that.
